Schopenhauer or Comte? I finally made my choice and gradually, with a sort of sobered enthusiasm, became a positivist; and just as gradually I lost Schopenhauer. Yet I do not reread Comte very often, and never with simple, direct pleasure, but rather with the slightly perverse (and certainly violent, if you get the hang of it) pleasure that the stylistic bizarreness of the mentally disturbed often inspire; while no philosopher to my knowledge is so pleasant and uplifting at first reading as Arthur Schopenhauer. (…) I want to show why Schopenhauer's intellectual attitude remains, in my view, an example for every aspiring philosopher; and also why, even if you end up disagreeing with him at the end of the day, you can't help but feel great gratitude towards him. Why, to quote Nietzsche again, “the fact that such a person has written has really increased the pleasure of living on this earth”.
