Tribale kunst, ook wel bekend als niet-westerse kunst of etnografische kunst, of, controversieel, primitieve kunst, is de beeldende kunst en materiële cultuur van inheemse volkeren. Tribale kunst heeft vaak een ceremonieel of religieus doel. Tribale kunst is het thema en vakmanschap van items uit tribale beschavingen, meestal met landelijke oorsprong. Tribale kunstwerken zijn van oudsher verzameld door westerse antropologen, particuliere verzamelaars, etnografische en natuurhistorische musea.

Niet-westerse kunst werd in de 19e eeuw door vooraanstaande westerse kunstprofessionals helemaal niet als kunst beschouwd. Deze items werden in plaats daarvan gezien als artefacten en culturele producten van "exotische" of "primitieve" culturen. Maar de manier waarop naar tribale kunst wordt gekeken, is in de tweede helft van de 20e eeuw veranderd. Voorafgaand aan de ontwikkeling van het postmodernisme in de jaren zestig zagen kunstcritici tribale kunsten vanuit een strikt formalistisch perspectief, waarbij ze weinig aandacht schonken aan de symbolische betekenis van het werk, de historische of culturele context of het doel van de kunstenaar. Sindsdien zijn wereldwijde collecties, tentoonstellingen en de kunstmarkt allemaal begonnen een hoge waarde te hechten aan tribale kunst, zoals Afrikaanse kunst in westerse collecties.

Het woord 'tribal' zou een perceptie kunnen creëren van een lager type kunst dat verbonden is met primitivisme en een gebrek aan verfijning impliceert in termen van bekwaamheid, ontwerp, intentie of concept. Nu musea hun collecties opnieuw evalueren en opnieuw samenstellen, erkennend dat tribale kunst verre van grof en primitief is en vaak blijk geeft van een uitvoeringsvaardigheid die veel verder gaat dan we verwachten, trekt het steeds meer aandacht van het grote publiek. Het heeft ook het vermogen om onze ziel te raken. Misschien als gevolg van hun meeslepende aanwezigheid en emotionele energie, worden onze innerlijke instincten gewekt en verbinden we ons met hun waarheidsgetrouwheid, waardoor ons gevoel van spirituele diepte wordt aangewakkerd.

Tribale kunst heeft drie hoofdcategorieën in museumcollecties: Afrikaanse kunst, in het bijzonder Afrikaanse kunst ten zuiden van de Sahara, Art of the Americas en Oceanische kunst, met name die uit Australië, Melanesië, Nieuw-Zeeland en Polynesië.

Afrikaanse tribale kunst

Afrikaanse tribale kunst omvat steensnijwerk, houtsnijwerk (maskers en sculpturen), sieraden, mandenmakerij, stoffen, pijpen, muziekinstrumenten, wapens, kralenwerk en het creëren van architectonische elementen zoals deuren en muurversieringen.

Niet alle stammen beoefenden deze kunstvormen; de ontwikkeling van deze ambachten werd beïnvloed door de beschikbaarheid van gereedschappen, middelen en knowhow. Het meest voorkomende materiaal was hout, dat vaak werd versierd met klei, verf, schelpen, kralen, ivoor, metaal, veren, dierenhaar, raffia en soms zelfs halfedelstenen.

Een allesomvattende religie omvatte Afrikaanse kunst als een essentieel onderdeel. Individuele afbeeldingen dienden als belichamingen of vertegenwoordigers van de vitale krachten die in alle levende wezens aanwezig zouden zijn. Deze voorstellingen van de doden spraken vaak voor hen, waardoor de essentie van de voorouders van de stam behouden bleef en mensen zich konden identificeren met de geesten van de voorouders. Hoewel veel van de gebruikte vormen seculiere elementen bevatten, en sommige kunstwerken slechts decoratief en sierlijk zijn, werden artefacten van Afrikaanse stammen over het algemeen geproduceerd als religieuze kunst - voor een specifiek ritueel of ceremonieel gebruik.

Veel tribale rituelen zijn gebaseerd op inwijding in leeftijdsgroepen, zoals de 'genootschappen' van jonge mannen of oude mannen, die elk hun eigen kenmerkende emblemen en cultusmotieven hebben. Veel gebeeldhouwde figuren en maskers worden geassocieerd met dergelijke 'samenlevingen' en symboliseren vaak beschermgoden of godheden zoals de God van de Donder of de God van het Vuur. Hoewel bepaalde culturen houtsnijwerk bijna als een luxeartikel produceerden, zijn ze net zo gewoon en populair als maskers en hadden ze een ritueel verband. De Yoruba-stam in Nigeria waren deskundige beeldhouwers van ronde figuren en bekroonden hun typisch enorme maskers vaak met massa's intens levende mannequins, waardoor de indruk werd gewekt dat er een feest aan de gang was. Het niveau en de reputatie van de Afrikaanse beeldhouwkunst waren zo hoog bij andere stammen, waaronder de Yoruba, dat beeldhouwers een status en reputatie konden krijgen die enigszins leken op die van een bekende kunstenaar in het Westen.

Oceanische stamkunst

Polynesië, Micronesië, Melanesië en Australazië zijn de vier verschillende etnogeografische regio's die deel uitmaken van de subregio Oceanië. Het creatieve erfgoed en de gewoonten van de inheemse bevolking die afkomstig is uit deze vier locaties, wordt Oceanische tribale kunst genoemd. De meerderheid van Polynesië, Micronesië en Melanesië werd uiteindelijk beïnvloed door deze Lapita-cultuur. Een andere factor was de Vietnamese Dong-Son-beschaving (ca. 600), die een belangrijke handelaar was in de westelijke Stille Oceaan en bronzen artefacten achterliet die in heel Oceanië zijn ontdekt.

Oceanische tribale kunst was verbonden met heidense ceremonies waarbij het bovennatuurlijke, geestaanbidding en vruchtbaarheid betrokken waren, hoewel elke regio en elke eilandengroep zijn eigen artistieke tradities had, die hun kunsten en ambachten beïnvloedden. Het merendeel van de materialen die door kunstenaars en ambachtslieden werden gebruikt, was bederfelijk, er werd een vrij breed spectrum aan kunst geproduceerd, waaronder bodypainting, tatoeage, schilderen, beeldhouwen, houtsnijwerk en textielkunst. Zo zijn er, afgezien van stenen constructies en beeldhouwwerken, relatief weinig voorbeelden bewaard gebleven.

Beroemde voorbeelden van Polynesische kunst die bewaard zijn gebleven, zijn onder meer de stenen tempels van de Genootschapseilanden, Paaseiland en de Marquesas; de monumentale stenen sculpturen (moai) op Rapa Nui/Paaseiland en de Marquesas, die het gebruik illustreren van ontwerpen met antropomorfe figuren met vooruitstekende tongen en uitpuilende ogen, gebruikelijk in veel oostelijke en afgelegen gebieden van Polynesië; en zeer versierde bastdoek in West-Polynesië.

Maskers waren een belangrijk thema in de inheemse kunst in heel Melanesië omdat ze werden gebruikt in ingewikkelde heidense rituelen en cultuspraktijken. Naast bodypainting en tatoeage, omvatten Micronesische tribale artefacten gestileerde houten maskers, beschilderde kano's en bewerkte houten kommen. De diverse vormen en media van Australische Aboriginal-kunst zijn onder meer bodypainting, rotsschildering, schorsschildering, rotsgravures, staande stenen, houtsnijwerk, beeldhouwkunst en sierversieringen op werktuigen en wapens.

Inheemse Amerikaanse Stammenkunst

De nomadische, jagerslevensstijl van de eerste en de iets meer statische maar desalniettemin arme omgeving van de laatste hebben een grote invloed gehad op de Indiaanse kunst. De beschikbaarheid van hulpbronnen, waaronder hout, teenwilgen, metaal, dierlijk bot, klei en katoen, was een andere belangrijke factor in het ontstaan van lokaal specifieke creatieve tradities.

Stammen in het zuidwesten waren meesters in het weven, de productie van aardewerk en het schilderen van fresco's. Tot deze stammen behoorden de Hohokam in het zuiden van Arizona, de Ansazi in het noorden van Arizona en New Mexico, de Mimbres in het zuidwesten van New Mexico, evenals de Zuni-, Navaho- en Hopi-volkeren. Inheemse Amerikanen in het zuidwesten ontwikkelden zandschilderen, gewoonlijk droog schilderen genoemd (met name de Navajo).

In het middenwesten werd de cultuur volledig gecreëerd door de stam, en het stond bekend om zowel zijn uitgebreide textielkunst als zijn bekende grondwerken, bekend als "beeltenisheuvels", die de vorm hadden van verschillende dieren. Naast gebeeldhouwde houten schalen en gepolijste stenen en koperen ornamenten omvatte de tribale kunst ook gebeeldhouwde stenen pijpen met motieven variërend van ultrarealistisch tot abstract.

Fijn gesneden schelpen, sierlijk beschilderde kledingaccessoires en pijpen in de vorm van vogels en dieren werden ook gemaakt in de zuidoostelijke regio. Ondanks het gebruik van klei van slechte kwaliteit, stond het echter vooral bekend om zijn prachtige aardewerk. Voor ceremonieel, religieus en persoonlijk gebruik werden aardewerkwerken gemaakt en gedecoreerd in een verscheidenheid aan bloemen- en geometrische patronen.

Mandenmakerij was een goed voorbeeld van Indiaanse kunst aan de westkust, met name in Californië. De Noordoost-indianen, vooral de Iroquois, stonden bekend om hun hardhouten kommen, geweven wampum-riemen, stekelvarkensquillwork en maskers van de False Face Society. De grootste tribale kunst van het noordwesten was beeldhouwkunst, vooral houtsnijwerk. Een van de meest voorkomende soorten handgesneden sculpturen waren totems, kleine houten figuren en maskers die minutieus waren beschilderd en vaak ingelegd met stenen en abalone schelpen.

Invloed op moderne kunst

Vanaf het midden van de 19e eeuw, toen steeds meer expedities tribale artefacten terugbrachten, begonnen Europese verzamelaars en kunstenaars interesse te tonen in wat toen bekend stond als primitivisme / primitieve kunst, typisch de kunst van zwart Afrika. Aan het einde van de 19e en het begin van de 20e eeuw waren er belangrijke tentoonstellingen van tribale kunst die niet-westerse kunst introduceerden in de westerse kunstwereld. In het Museum of Modern Art waren belangrijke tentoonstellingen te zien, zoals de Indian Art of the United States uit 1941 en de Africa Negro Art uit 1935. Veel hedendaagse kunstenaars, waaronder expressionisten, kubisten en surrealisten, hebben inspiratie gevonden in blootstelling aan tribale kunsten.

Grote kunstenaars als Vincent van Gogh en Henri Matisse waren diep getroffen door tribale kunst, terwijl Paul Gauguin er uit de eerste hand mee in contact kwam in Frans-Polynesië. Ze werden gevolgd door Pablo Picasso in het midden van de 20e eeuw, wiens beroemde vroege kubistische meesterwerk Les Demoiselles d'Avignon prominent Afrikaanse maskers bevatte. Het kubisme werd sterk beïnvloed door tribale kunst. Voornamelijk puttend uit de formele implicaties van tribale kunst, beschadigde de kunstenaar snel het westerse paradigma door het beeld te breken en perspectief op te offeren. Een van de belangrijkste resultaten hiervan was de abstracte schilderkunst.

Rond deze tijd begon het Duitse collectief Die Brücke zich meer te concentreren op de intuïtieve, primitieve en rituele aspecten van niet-westerse kunst, en lanceerde de belangrijke moderne kunststijl die bekend staat als het expressionisme. Door invloed te putten uit tribale kunst, kubisme en expressionisme in Zürich, New York en ten slotte Parijs, droegen de dadaïsten bij aan de ontmanteling van het westerse paradigma. De driedimensionale tegenhanger van collage en assemblage werd grotendeels gebruikt in Dada's picturale of sculpturale werk. Dit stuk gemaakt van gerecyclede materialen bewijst dat kunst van alles kan worden gemaakt en niet beperkt blijft tot schilderen, uitsnijden of modelleren. De beeldtaal was provocerend op politiek, sociaal of esthetisch niveau en combineerde vaak elementen van tribale kunst. Dada introduceerde de ideeën die uiteindelijk leidden tot conceptuele kunst. De invloed van de conceptuele kunst fuseerde met die van de andere stromingen van de moderne kunst en vormde de grote, brede, buitengewoon rijke, gevarieerde en internationaal gediversifieerde rivier van hedendaagse kunst die de wereld momenteel geniet.
