Hoe Surrealisme stijl definiëren?

Surrealisme is een literaire en artistieke stroming die in 1924 in Frankrijk verscheen, geschreven door André Breton. Het kan worden vertaald als "boven realisme" of "meer dan echt". Het is een dictaat van het denken, waarbij rede en esthetische of morele zorgen moeten worden uitgewist. Voor Breton wordt het surrealisme gerechtvaardigd door een verlangen naar emancipatie: door het onbewuste te bevrijden om het met het bewuste te verzoenen, zal de mensheid zich kunnen bevrijden van de beperkingen opgelegd door logica en rede. In de literatuur zal deze benadering zich manifesteren in merkwaardige experimenten, zoals automatisch schrift of het exquise lijk. In de kunst zullen verschillende stromingen opvallen: we spreken van organisch surrealisme (Joan Miro, André Masson, Max Ernst), voor degenen die automatische technieken gebruiken om hun creatieve verbeelding de vrije loop te laten, of dromerig surrealisme (Salvador Dali, René Magritte) voor degenen die gebruik traditionele technieken om surrealistische onderwerpen weer te geven (visioenen, dromen, hallucinante taferelen, impulsen, angsten, fobieën, verlangens...).
