On the occasion of the escalation of hostilities in the Middle East, where the danger of a world war outbreak makes Satan rub his hands, I remembered the song of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards "Sympathy for the Devil". An iconic song from 1968, which inspired me to paint this work, with a mocking mood despite the seriousness of the matter.
Sung in the first person by the twenty-five-year-old MIck Jagger who plays the Devil (without even naming him), the song refers to a series of dramatic historical events, such as the crucifixion of Jesus, the deadly World War II, but also the assassination of the Kennedy brothers.
The purpose of the song is certainly not to glorify Evil as demonstrated by the events it refers to. On the contrary, these events reveal the power of the Devil, but as proof of our own inability to counter him by fighting against him effectively. He often even lures us into playing his game.
For all the above "projects", as well as for the current situation in the Middle East, we humans are responsible. But it is quite easy to abdicate this responsibility in order to transfer it to the "powers of Evil", washing our hands like Pontius Pilate.
Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, now in their eighties, have every right to laugh with us today, since more than half a century after their most iconic song was first performed, we not only failed to learn from our mistakes, but we rather got even weaker in fighting against Evil.
