The Dance of Light and Shadow
As sunlight filters through the gaps in Hemera’s form, it paints delicate patterns on her surface. These voids—intentional absences—reveal glimpses of the unseen. The light dances across her, casting elongated shadows that shift with the passing hours. The gaps, painted a soft orange hue, evoke both vulnerability and resilience. They invite viewers to peer beyond the physical, into the spaces where imagination and memory reside.
Stripes of Memory
Across Hemera’s torso, diagonal stripes intersect her body. Each stripe tells a story—a memory etched into the metal. Some are black, reminiscent of midnight secrets whispered under star-studded skies. Others bear the earthy brown of sun-kissed soil, evoking journeys taken and paths left behind. These stripes are not mere adornments; they are the echoes of experiences woven into her very essence.
The Unfinished Goddess
Hemera stands incomplete, her lower half dissolving into the unseen. Is she emerging from the earth or fading back into it? Perhaps she embodies the transient nature of existence—the perpetual becoming. Her gaze, unyielding and contemplative, fixes upon the horizon. She is both muse and creator, inviting us to ponder the interplay of light and shadow, memory and absence. In her incompleteness, she whispers, “Life is a work in progress, and beauty resides in the gaps.”
Hemera’s Glow beckons us to engage with our own story, to find solace in imperfection, and to celebrate the luminous spaces between what is and what could be.
(The metal bar seen coming up from the floor into the underside of the sculpture is the stand that was used during photography. It is not part of the sculpture. Hemera's Glow is built to hang on a prominent wall. The process to create her is labor intensive and time consuming. It requires the bicycle chain be separated into its many individual links so they can be used in the formation of a much more lifelike form. Each bicycle chain link is then hand welded to the next forming one solid structure. The black color is created through a process of hot bluing in which the sculpture is heated to 300-400 degrees F, then coated in an oil. The oil penetrates the metal turning it dark and serving as a protection against rust. Hemera was then hand painted to achieve the desired effect. If you prefer a solid color, such as gloss black, let the artist know when purchasing. The metal is then sealed with an acrylic lacquer.)

Adjacent to his welding station, he works with clay, molding it into forms that conjure emotions buried within us all. His clay works, much like his steel sculptures, bear the unmistakable mark of a unique style. They are robust yet elegant, their surfaces adorned with smoothness that hint at the beauty of the human form and the artist’s deep respect for the natural world.
Beyond his visual art, he is also a prolific writer, having authored thirteen acclaimed novels. His books, much like his metal sculptures and clay works, are richly detailed and deeply symbolic. They explore themes of transformation and renewal, mirroring his own artistic process of turning raw materials into something new and beautiful. These themes however are the harbinger of the artist's inner pain and hidden demons. A survivor of depression, Goodman pulls his knowledge of true darkness and then splashes it into metal, clay, or canvas.
His home city of Atlanta plays a significant role in his work. The city’s dynamic energy, its blend of old and new, echoes in his art and writing. He draws inspiration from the city’s architecture, its people, and its ever-changing landscape. Yet, his work is not just a reflection of the city, but also a commentary on it, a dialogue with it.
