The Evolution of a Masterpiece
In the realm of contemporary art, few pieces capture the essence of transformation and the complexity of human emotions quite like Milo's painting, "It’s Complicated." The journey of this artwork began in December 2019 when Milo first conceived the idea and titled it "The Pond." Inspired by a dream, the initial version of the painting was an attempt to capture the serene beauty and reflective nature of a pond. However, as Milo delved deeper into the creative process, he found himself unsatisfied with the outcome.
First Revision: Water-Dipped Enamel PaintDetermined to achieve his artistic vision, Milo embarked on the first revision of the painting. He layered the canvas with water-dipped enamel paint, a technique that added a unique texture and depth to the artwork. Despite the innovative approach, Milo still felt that the painting lacked the emotional resonance he sought to convey.
Second Revision: Oil Overlay and SandpaperingIn his pursuit of perfection, Milo undertook a second revision. This time, he employed an all-oil overlay and meticulously sandpapered the surface to create a smoother, more polished finish. The painting was then renamed "I Saw Her," reflecting Milo's evolving perspective and the narrative he wished to express. Yet, even with these changes, the artist sensed that the piece was still incomplete.
The Definitive Version: Completing "It’s Complicated"The definitive version of the painting was completed in March 2022, marking the culmination of Milo's three-revision process. The final artwork, now titled "It’s Complicated," showcases the traces of its layered mix media origins, the enamel paint from the water-dipped process, and the layers of oil on the finishing surface. These elements combine to create a rich, textured composition that embodies the complexity of human experiences.
Milo's painting is more than just a visual masterpiece; it is a narrative tapestry that explores themes of fidelity and relationships. The landscape underwent significant revisions, with Milo adding three figurative subjects to illustrate an everyday life story. These subjects, interwoven with the layered textures, convey the intricacies of human connections and the emotional depth of life's journey.
The three figurative subjects in "It’s Complicated" are central to the painting's narrative. Each figure represents a different aspect of fidelity and relationships, capturing moments of joy, sorrow, and contemplation. The interplay between these figures and the surrounding landscape creates a dynamic composition that invites viewers to reflect on their own experiences and connections.
The use of mixed media techniques is a hallmark of Milo's artistic style. The combination of enamel paint, oil overlay, and sandpapering results in a multi-layered texture that adds depth and dimension to the painting. This approach not only enhances the visual appeal of the artwork but also serves as a metaphor for the complexity of human emotions and relationships.
At its core, "It’s Complicated" is a painting that resonates with viewers on an emotional level. The journey of its creation, from "The Pond" to "I Saw Her" to its final form, mirrors the artist's own exploration of identity, connection, and the passage of time. Each layer of the painting tells a story, capturing the essence of life's intricate tapestry.
"It’s Complicated" stands as a testament to Milo's artistic vision and his dedication to capturing the depth of human experience. Through its three-revision process, the painting has evolved from a simple concept to a profound narrative that speaks to the complexity of fidelity and relationships. Milo's innovative techniques and emotional storytelling make "It’s Complicated" a masterpiece that continues to inspire and resonate with audiences worldwide.

Milo Abadilla hails from Silicon Valley California from as early as 1988, and is originally of Filipino heritage. A self-taught artist, his technique explores elements and realms of the abstract, fantasy, and surrealism. His medium is oil on a canvas substrate. His subjects depict life experiences reordered and reinvented by social challenges, rituals, and recurring themes. Beginning his work based on a platform of reality, Abadilla often ends up with an art piece incorporating spontaneous and unscripted elements. The artist seeks to create a hidden plot in his art – an encrypted message that one is invited to decode and decipher with no right or wrong answer. Beyond merely creating a painting, posing this kind of challenge is what separates and elevates Abadilla’s work.
