Je suis peintre depuis vingt-cinq ans. Mes œuvres reflètent des expériences personnelles, en particulier ma vie pendant de nombreuses années dans les Appalaches. Qu’elle ait trait à l’homme, à la nature ou à la machine, la vie dans les montagnes américaines est variée, parfois rude, parfois agréable, mais elle a toujours pour cadre un paysage naturel d’une extrême beauté. L’aquarelle, grâce à sa transparence, est un médium idéal pour rendre avec éclat les effets de lumière et de couleur de ces lieux. J’aime me servir des pigments transparents de l’aquarelle, et je les utilise d’une manière moins traditionnelle que les lavis appliqués librement.
Etant installé depuis peu en Anjou, je fais aujourd’hui porter mes centres d’intérêt sur les paysages ruraux et urbains de France, qui évoquent pour moi l’atmosphère particulière du vieux continent chargé d’histoire. Je peins maintenant aussi beaucoup à l’huile, et j’apprécie l’onctuosité de ce medium qui me donne un autre niveau d’expression plus tactile.
En tant que coloriste, je choisis d’appliquer des couleurs pures peu diluées qui me permettent d’obtenir un bon contrôle de la peinture et du temps de séchage. J’utilise peu les surfaces blanches, et je réduis au maximum les différences de tons afin de souligner les contrastes de couleurs et d’intensités. Les formes sont également simplifiées au profit des variations de couleurs, afin de mettre en valeur le thème essentiel du tableau. Avec l’aquarelle, l’utilisation des pigments transparents permet à la lumière d’être réfléchie par le papier blanc, et de garder ainsi la qualité lumineuse de l’aquarelle tout en créant une couleur plus riche et plus profonde.
