A few years ago I was convalescing in a home after a long illness and had few materials to use to express my creativity. One day, it occurred to me that, given the abundance of magazines in the TV room, I could turn my hand to creating collages and so I got busy with my wee scissors.

After using all the paper and card I had, I started using tracing paper as a support. The overall effect achieved is very different if the tracing paper is laid on white or coloured paper, making these pieces quite versatile for different environments.

The title of this piece in particular is inspired both by the movement upwards of the hand that counters the "weight" suggested and also by the fact that this kind of art is anything but "grave". As Oscar Wilde said "Life is too important to be taken seriously" and Marcel Duchamp (whom I greatly admire) also knew how to infuse his work with tongue-in-cheek humour. Sometimes all art is, is fun(ny).

Louisa Linton is a visual artist from Scotland. Just like Van Gogh, she was amazed and seduced by the light in the south of France and so, in 1984, she decided to settle in Montpellier where she has lived and worked ever since.

Ms Linton holds an B.A. Degree in French from the University of Edinburgh as well as diplomas in Fine Arts and Art Therapy from the University of Montpellier.

After years as an Art Therapist in a centre for children and adolescents with severe learning difficulties, Ms Linton now devotes her time to her own self-expression. She uses her creativity in lots of different ways, including writing, clothes design, gardening and music, but the forms of expression she has been using since she was a child are her favourites: drawing and painting.
