My earlier paintings: “Color symphonies” (oil on canvas)
“Still life” (1988) and “Autumn still life” (1988) are examples of my earlier work. My aim was to create colorful compositions – still lives, landscapes, portraits – with vibrant strokes, interaction of colors and objects sometimes reflected in each other.

White lines on dark background (gouache on cardboard):
“Party” (1990) and “Cube” (1993) are examples of the body of work which I began in 1989.
These are mostly minimalist figurative compositions with white lines on dark background. Human figures, their interaction, linear transformations of the objects, rhythmic play of construction – these are the main features of my work.
Since then linear style has become dominating in my activity, although during all this time I have also been creating colorful compositions with substantive philosophical and psychological content.

Digital (digitally embellished drawings):
My current body of work is a natural continuation of my line-works. In 2000’s, I began applying digital effects to my drawings. The idea was to enrich simple line and make it look more complex, thus through that complexity create a new kind of form.
I call these works “digitally embellished drawings”. This name is due to the way of execution, that is – I scan my drawings and then get the final result using combination of various digital effects.
The examples of this body of work are “Abstract dance” (2006) and “Lovers” (2007).

Lia Chechelashvili uses lines to describe relationships. Her painting The Cube depicts two figures: one female figure made of weightless line that freely moves about as it describes the female form and one male figure that exists more statically in the lower region of The Cube. The play between Chechelashvili's figures and her clever use of line is telling. With just enough information she describes a universal relationship within a closed system - a familiar allegory of male and female archetypes. With well-considered line she defines a still introverted male, facing away from the viewer and the curvilinear levitating female.
Chechelashvili's work examines human narrative within reductive form. Her background in quantitative thinking is a visible component in her efficiently designed figures and volumes. Chechelashvili's figures exist between physiological and psychological representation. With linear transformations she skews the viewer's perceptions and entices a rewarding visual journey.
