Mariia Gorbunova is a conceptual painter and multidisciplinary artist whose practice, active since 2005, is rooted in an incisive interrogation of materiality and memory. Specializing in abstract painting, collage, and performance, her work has been exhibited internationally—in Belgium, Spain, Luxembourg, the United Kingdom, and Russia—and is part of permanent museum collections in Russia.
I deliberately juxtapose textures and hues—melding the tactile solidity of plaster, textile, and leather with the jarring accents of nails and buttons—to forge compositions that are both viscerally dynamic and conceptually charged. This tension is not only visual but also metaphysical, gesturing toward the transient and often contradictory nature of memory.
Themes of remembrance, sensory experience, femininity, and the spectral echoes of a lost childhood recur throughout my work. I conceive of each abstract landscape or imagined space as a “container of memory,” where tangible textures, chromatic interplay, and sculptural forms serve as archives of experience. In this way, my canvases become sites of deconstruction and reassembly—spaces where the material and immaterial coalesce to evoke an ever-shifting, multilayered dialogue between past and present.
