Mitsumasa Kadota’s "11 Colors" (2015) is an arresting work that embodies his signature approach to painting—one that challenges conventional techniques and redefines the relationship between color, movement, and texture. In this large-scale composition, Kadota applies acrylic and carborundum to cotton, creating an expressive, multi-dimensional surface where pigments appear to flow, fracture, and coalesce in an organic yet highly intentional manner.
Kadota’s mastery lies in his ability to manipulate color and texture to create a sense of controlled chaos. The title, "11 Colors," is a direct reference to the interplay of multiple hues, which merge and diverge dynamically across the canvas. The use of carborundum, an uncommon material in painting, lends the surface an added complexity—giving it a distinctive granular quality that interacts with light in subtle yet striking ways.
Unlike traditional abstract works that rely on predefined compositions, "11 Colors" appears to evolve organically, resembling natural phenomena such as mineral formations, cascading water, or windblown pigments. This fluidity and unpredictability make it an exceptional addition to any collection, offering new visual experiences with each viewing.
Kadota’s work is held in major collections such as the Sezon Museum of Modern Art, and his exhibitions span renowned institutions worldwide, including MoMA's Young Patron Program. This painting, created during a pivotal period in his career, encapsulates his exploration of painting beyond its conventional boundaries. His unique method, rooted in both intuition and refined technique, results in a work that is deeply engaging, inviting contemplation and discovery over time.
"11 Colors" is a dynamic, richly textured painting where each section of color feels almost sculptural. The application of paint ranges from bold, sweeping gestures to delicate, feathery transitions, creating a mesmerizing interplay of movement and depth. The interaction between opaque and translucent layers allows for an almost geological sense of stratification, where colors seem to emerge from beneath the surface.
In person, the work has a physical presence that cannot be fully captured in images—there is a subtle sheen in some areas, a granular roughness in others, and a depth that shifts depending on the light and viewing angle. The large format enhances its immersive quality, making it a commanding yet harmonious presence in any space.
Kadota’s ability to transform color into a near-tactile experience makes this painting a remarkable piece for collectors who appreciate abstract works that push the boundaries of traditional media. With its interplay of bold hues and intricate textural details, "11 Colors" is not just a visual experience but an evolving dialogue between form, material, and perception.

Born in 1980 in Shizuoka, Japan, Mitsumasa Kadota has built an artistic career defined by a relentless pursuit of new horizons in the realm of painting. Early memories—such as the striking image of a toppled camphor tree whose exposed roots, resembling sheer cliffs, served as a haven for countless crabs—profoundly shaped his view of the visible and the hidden. For Kadota, just as a tree’s unseen roots sustain its life, personal experiences and histories, often overlooked at first glance, harbor deep, transformative meanings waiting to be rediscovered.

Kadota’s work boldly navigates the traditional limits of painting, challenging established boundaries and reimagining the relationship between color, gesture, and form. Inspired by the notion that every ending signals the start of something new—much like Marcel Duchamp’s revolutionary reorientation of an everyday object—he shows us that what might appear as a downfall or imperfection can, in fact, evolve into an expression of beauty and renewed purpose.

Grounded in a solid academic foundation from Tokyo Zokei University—where he earned both his B.F.A. in Painting and completed a research program—Kadota’s journey has been punctuated by significant exhibitions on both national and international stages.

His solo and group shows have graced prestigious venues such as Lincoln Center in New York, as well as galleries and museums across Japan, Korea, Australia, and Europe. His innovative approach has earned him honors including the Holbein Scholarship and the distinction of being named a Junior Associate of MoMA.

With works held in prominent collections like that of the Sezon Museum of Modern Art, Kadota remains committed to experimentation and artistic reinvention. By transforming personal memories and natural imagery into a vibrant visual dialogue, he challenges traditional conventions and invites us to reconsider our own narratives—reminding us that even amid struggle and transformation, a new beginning is always on the horizon.

Ultimately, Mitsumasa Kadota is an artist whose work is deeply rooted in both literal and metaphorical soil. He encourages viewers to look beyond the superficial, to discover in every mark, every hue, and every brushstroke an enduring cycle of creation, renewal, and rebirth.
