“I create images to reflect ancestral traditions”

Jason Gardner is an American photographer, based in Paris and New York. He collaborated and photographed the New York music scene before joining groups in Brazil. This experience immerses him in the culture, music and rituals of the Pernambuco carnival. In 2013, he published “A Flower in the Mouth” (Visual Anthropology Press, USA), a testimony to this immersion. By focusing on traditional, folkloric and community celebrations, Gardner immortalizes the hidden and intimate side of these ancient rituals practiced throughout Europe and the world. He collaborates with ethnographers and local experts to understand each of the fifteen festivals he photographed.

In 2023, he published his second book “We the Spirits” (GOST Books, United Kingdom), testimony to these ancient rituals, the original core of what we call Carnival.

“We the spirits” was selected in the Top 50 portfolios by Critical Mass 2022 by Photolucida. Exhibitions present his photographic reportage in Europe, the United States, Canada and South America. Jason Gardner's work has been published in GEO Magazine France, The New York Times, Rolling Stone, New York Magazine, Le Parisien and NPR.org
