Una forma d'arte, principalmente pittura, che è stata influenzata dallo spiritualismo è chiamata arte spiritualista, arte spirituale, arte medianica o pittura psichica. L'arte spirituale ha avuto un'influenza significativa sul modernismo e, di conseguenza, sull'arte di oggi.

Georgiana Houghton e Piet Mondrian sono due noti artisti spirituali. Lo spiritualismo è servito anche come ispirazione per l'arte astratta pionieristica di Vasily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian, Kasimir Malevich e František Kupka. Diversi tipi di arte spirituale

Sebbene molti artisti siano stati influenzati dallo spiritualismo, pochissimi hanno creato ciò che gli spiritualisti chiamano "arte spirituale". Ciò che costituisce esattamente "arte spirituale" può essere classificato in tre categorie principali: opere d'arte "precipitate"; ritratti di spiriti dipinti dalle mani dei medium durante le sedute spiritiche; e creazioni realizzate da medium-artisti che affermano che le loro mani sono guidate dagli spiriti.

I medium affermano che nel primo caso di "precipitazione", gli spiriti non si sono serviti di un artista umano per guidare le loro mani; invece, hanno creato i dipinti stessi. In un secondo esempio di arte degli spiriti, i ritratti degli spiriti, era molto popolare per i medium disegnare ritratti degli spiriti che dicevano fossero presenti alle sedute spiritiche durante l'apice dello spiritualismo. Gli "auragrafi", che descrivono la storia, il presente e il futuro di una persona visti da un medium o da un chiaroveggente, sono vicini al secondo tipo di "arte spirituale".

Secondo gli spiritualisti, il terzo tipo di "arte spirituale" consiste in opere di architettura, scultura e pittura prodotte dagli spiriti che dirigono le mani dell'artista. Nel secondo gruppo (ritratti di spiriti), si dice che anche gli spiriti dirigano spesso le mani del medium, ma nella terza categoria vengono create varie opere d'arte piuttosto che ritratti degli spiriti stessi.

Opere d'arte “precipitate”.

David Duguid (1832-1907) è stato il primo medium noto in grado di "precipitare" dipinti spirituali. Sebbene Duguid dipingesse spesso con l'aiuto di pittori spirituali, durante le sue sedute spiritiche le sue guide creavano anche dipinti "diretti" (precipitati).

I fratelli Campbell, che risiedevano nella comunità spiritualista di Lily Dale, New York, furono forse i primi medium a specializzarsi in dipinti precipitanti. Nonostante non fossero fratelli, Allen Campbell (1833-1919) e Charles Shourds (1863-1926) condividevano una casa e conducevano sedute spiritiche insieme. I fratelli Campbell non hanno mai messo le mani sulla tela mentre creavano i loro ritratti più famosi, tra cui quelli di Napoleone e Abraham Lincoln, che venivano eseguiti in pubblico. Ritratti di spirito

Victor Hugo (1802–1855) creò i suoi dipinti spirituali durante le sedute spiritiche tenute nella sua residenza di Jersey, nelle Isole del Canale. A quel tempo, un fiorente mercato spiritualista era sostenuto anche da persone che cercavano ritratti dei loro cari defunti negli Stati Uniti. Arte prodotta da spiriti che dirigono le mani dell'artista

Gli spiritualisti brasiliani che praticano la pittura in trance spesso incanalano le opere di noti pittori e scultori. José Medrado (nato nel 1961) è famoso in tutto il mondo per i suoi dipinti acrilici in trance e per quanto sia semplice per lui produrre un'opera d'arte con l'aiuto di molti assistenti spirituali. In stato di trance ha creato dipinti sotto l'influenza di maestri della pittura come Renoir, Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet, Matisse, Gauguin, Cassatt, Da Vinci, Morisot, Manet. Conosciuto anche come Medrado in Brasile è Luiz Antônio Gasparetto (1949-2018), che dipinge e scolpisce con le sue mani guidato da Degas, Sandro Botticelli, Amedeo Modigliani e molti altri artisti famosi.

Rientrano in questa categoria anche alcuni esempi di architettura spirituale. Attraverso l'uso di medium, Iulia Hasdeu (1869–1888), ha rivelato i piani architettonici sia per il suo famoso "Castello Hasdeu" a Câmpina che per la sua tomba a Bucarest. Il villaggio italiano di Rosazza, vicino a Biella, costruito tra il 1880 e il 1899 per il senatore e massone italiano Federico Rosazza (1813–1899), è un altro esempio di architettura dello spirito. Fu progettato dal pittore Giuseppe Maffei (1821-1901). Si basava sui piani datigli dagli spiriti di Agostino d'Ippona (354–430), che non ha mai lavorato come architetto in vita sua, e da un uomo senza nome di Volterra, in Toscana.
