Bringing walls to life with murals
9 June 2009 /FEYZA TOKAÇ
Mural painting is a novel way to decorate and personalize your home, office or any other space that comes to mind. Walls can be brought to life with images of flowers, animals, and portraits, making them personalized and special spaces.
Mona Melleberg Yükseltürk, a mural painter who recently relocated to Turkey from the US, shared with Today's Zaman information about some of her projects both in Turkey and abroad. She can reproduce nearly any image on any surface and has painted murals of dogs, elephants, jungles, flowers, cartoon characters and portraits among many other themes and images.
“Painting a customer mural or even just a delicate motif above a door, for example, is a very personal process between myself and my client. I feel fortunate to be able to make their visions a reality, creating one-of-a-kind spaces that become great conversation pieces in homes and businesses,” she said.
Yükseltürk, who has had an aptitude for mural painting from an early age, recently completed a three-piece panel of elephants marching in a jungle for a young boy in Ankara. The creative artist explained that the boy for whom the panels were made loved elephants. The boy's mother gave Yükseltürk some of his favorite books and movies to give her an idea of what they wanted. After spending some time getting to know the boy and his interests, Yükseltürk discovered he also had a teddy bear which he loved and carried around with him everywhere. This led her to paint a portrait of the boy carrying his teddy bear while riding on one of the elephants in the mural, which looks very much like the images from the children's books given to the talented artist by the boy's mother. He was very surprised and happy when he saw the mural, Yükseltürk said, noting that one of the greatest aspects about the mural was that it was painted on panels, allowing the boy and his family to take it with them wherever they go or transfer it to a different wall.
For Yükseltürk, meeting clients before starting a project, discussing their ideas to get a feel for their preferences and observing the space on which the mural is going to be painted are all very important. During the consultation session, for which there is no fee, Yükseltürk not only takes time to understand the needs of the client but also gives an estimate of the cost and the time it will take to complete the painting. Explaining that she is very flexible with her work, Yükseltürk said the entire process is a cooperative one with her and the client collaborating together. While sometimes she offers her own suggestions on colors and themes, Yükseltürk noted that she is also open to working with clients who have strict preferences.
Some mural painters reproduce images on walls using a projector, but Yükseltürk takes pride in making custom murals freehand without the use of a projector. Emphasizing that mural painting is her passion, this young artist embarks on a journey of research, sketches and contemplation after consulting with her clients. When she is asked to reproduce an image she is unfamiliar with, Yükseltürk carefully and enthusiastically studies the topic to be able to provide the best and most accurate reproduction. “If it is a new subject matter, I will research it. If I am going to paint a mural of trees, I will go outside and carefully observe trees. I will look at how the light hits it and how the objects around it appear,” she said.
Before she begins transforming a space into a unique and creative area, Yükseltürk makes several sketches on paper and presents them to the client so they can make changes or additions before the mural is painted on the wall. “The most important point for is me that we are on the same page with the client,” she said, adding that she welcomes her clients observing her while she works. She also explained that she is open to working with people from all over the world, adding that she currently has two projects scheduled in the US.
Asked about her impression of Turkey, Yükseltürk said: “I think it's very promising. People are very friendly. There are a lot of opportunities here. I see a lot of restaurants and hotels opening here. I've also met a lot of mothers who are excited about the idea of being able to capture the themes of their children's favorite books and movies in a mural, so I am confident and have a positive outlook.”
Mural painting is generally known to be a costly type of art. But Yükseltürk said the price “really depends on what is being painted, its size, where it is painted -- indoors or outdoors -- and the subject matter.” She added that supplies are usually one-third of the cost while two-thirds is for her time and talent. She emphasized, however, that she prefers to keep her services “affordable and not pretentiously expensive.”
Among her biggest paintings is a mural of dogs painted for a dog training center in Portland, Oregon. The mural is approximately 50 x 22 feet (15.2 x 6.7 meters).
When asked about her future projects, Yükseltürk said she'd like to make a painting based on Ottoman themes such as Turkish baths, old vases and Ottoman women. She also said that she'd like to work with nongovernmental organizations that can sponsor her so she can paint murals for children's wards at hospitals and at orphanages.
Yükseltürk is a first-generation American whose family is from Norway. She worked as an operations manager and business analyst for HSBC for over six years and up until last year as a software business analyst at Kronos Incorporated. While she has created murals as a hobby for most of her adult life, toward the end of 2000 she began developing mural painting into a profession. Explaining that she has always been inspired by her father, Per Otto Melleberg, who is also a talented artist, as well as Edvard Munch, a Norwegian Symbolist painter, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, one of the greatest French painters of the Post-Impressionist period, Yükseltürk said she wants to be able to concentrate on her passion for painting from now on and is on the lookout for new projects.
