“Portrait of My Innocence” by artist Stephen Lucas, is the original painting that hung above the fireplace in Jack’s (Sean Hayes) apartment throughout the years of “Will and Grace”. The original is a beautiful 20” x 15” Acrylic on Paper painting and is a Masterpiece in and of itself...coupled with the fact that it is also part of this “Paradigm Shifting Television History” makes it an irresistible treasure to own.

“Will and Grace” -- An Invaluable Contribution to Humanity.

Nominated for 49 Emmys, and winner of 12 (including Outstanding Comedy Series in 2000), 24 Golden Globe nominations, 14 SAG Awards, and 6 People's Choice Awards (as of their seventh season), “Will and Grace” has become one of the most celebrated shows of its time.

As with any show, introducing a controversial subject into mainstream thinking, there were those opposed to it on both sides of the spectrum. Conservatives felt it was too much and gay activist groups felt it was too little.

Much to the surprise of NBC and the creators of “Will and Grace”, the sitcom was an immediate hit and that launched eight seasons of funny and heartwarming episodes. With it began a surge of compassion, tolerance and acceptance of homosexuality that did not exist before and it flooded the American mainstream. I watched in amazement as the affects of “Will and Grace” rippled throughout society healing old rifts and phobia in the workplace and in families, in all walks of life.

I believe what the writers of Will and Grace created was genius. They took a volatile subject, and through light humor, presented to the American public (and eventually the world) an honest look at human frailties; struggles and flaws of characters whose lives were not so unlike our own. They “took the claws” out of the mystery of homosexuality so we could begin to relate in a compassionate way with the people in our own lives who are homosexual, be they family members or co-workers.

Yes, “Will and Grace” stayed out of making political or social statements, but the fact remains that the light humor of “Will and Grace” helped the gay community open up dialog with their friends, families and co-workers. There was nothing so threatening in the episodes that you couldn’t just sit down with Mom and Dad, friends and foes and have some laughs…and humor always creates a forum for open communication. Even straight people watched and loved it. Little by little, year by year, I watched our society as it relaxed and loosened their fear about homosexuality.

I commend NBC and the creators of “Will and Grace” for their incomprehensible contribution to humanity. Their creative genius and vision will continue to influence the conscious evolution of every society on this planet.

It was the “Will” of the people that made “Will and Grace” a hit and it is the “Grace” of compassion and tolerance that will carry on the healing that this show has begun. Do you think the title of this sitcom was an accident or was it Divine Inspiration?

The original painting is in our private collection.
