In the Mahjong Parlor Collection, we see equal parts isolation and inclusion as a small group of friends and fellow countrymen come together to share in a favored pastime. Together, they find comfort and understanding in a ritual gathering. In a simple game, the men escape from the troubles of the outside world. Nestled away in a secluded nook, the men sit around a a small wooden table, their game board illuminated by the warm glow of the ceiling lamp. Their worries forgotten, the friends will play long into the night.

The Mahjong Parlor Collection showcases a hidden world of underground rooms, converted tea houses, and exclusive dens reserved for those with the permission to enter. Mahjong was brought to the United States in the 1920s by Joseph Park Babcock, during a time when many Americans held ancient China in high regard. Mahjong was marketed as an exotic and mystical game played in ancient China and it quickly gained popularity. The game was played by many Americans, including Chinese Americans who saw the game as a way to connect with their Chinese heritage while also playing a trendy game.

Hudson Marshall (born 1974, Montreal, Canada) is an emerging contemporary digital artist currently based in Toronto, Canada. He is fascinated with creating works that uncover the lesser observed experiences of the working man.

Marshall's work infuses urban landscapes and interiors with rich colors and uses light and shadow to set an enigmatic tone. The scenes are pervaded by a sense of isolation, silence, and inner conflict. His chosen locations are often lesser observed settings. At boxing gyms, mahjong parlors, auction houses, and corporate boardrooms, the scenes are often inhabited by a single figure or a small group who seem lost in their own space. These people escape from the trials and tribulations of the modern world in places few others access.

You can find his work published regularly on social media and for sale online in a variety of formats.
