Hildegarde Handsaeme
Hildegarde Handsaeme is a contemporary Belgian artist celebrated for her minimalist yet emotionally resonant figurative paintings. Born in Kortrijk in 1958, she has developed a distinctive visual language where geometric clarity meets poetic emotion. Her work reduces the female form to its most essential curves, resulting in balanced, harmonious compositions that convey both strength and serenity.
Working primarily with acrylic on canvas and ink on paper, Handsaeme creates artworks that transcend mere representation. Each piece becomes a visual poem — refined, contemplative, and deeply connected to femininity, balance, and timeless symbolism. Her style is instantly recognizable, often making a traditional signature unnecessary.
Her paintings have been exhibited internationally, including in New York, Paris, Amsterdam, and Brussels, and are sought after by collectors who appreciate minimalist elegance, symbolic abstraction, and the enduring power of the feminine form.

The Silence in the Line – About My Work ‘La Baigneuse’
La Baigneuse is an ode to simplicity. With a single continuous line, I aim to capture the essence of feminine presence: silence, introspection, and inner strength. No background, no color — only form.
I choose black ink on white paper because the contrast allows the emotion to speak purely. The figure is not a portrait or model, but a distilled thought. She is not just bathing in invisible water — she is immersed in her own world.
In my work, I don’t seek realism, but balance. A composition must rest, just like the figure. Every line carries weight and purpose. Nothing is accidental.
La Baigneuse is an invitation to pause and reflect. It speaks to collectors and viewers who are drawn to minimal art with maximum meaning.

Beyond the Lines – A New Visual Harmony
Beyond the Lines – A New Visual Harmony
Art is a language without words, a dialogue between lines, shapes, and the intangible emotions they evoke. My latest work, Beyond the Lines, is a quest for balance and subtlety, where minimalist lines merge into a composition that is both refined and powerful.
In this creation, I explore the interplay between geometry and human expression. The figures appear to converse, their contours blending together, interrupted by abstract structures. This dance of connection and space invites the viewer to interpret the unfolding story in their own way.
As with all my works, the essence lies in the linework: pure, flowing movements that combine tranquility and dynamism. Beyond the Lines transcends the figurative, encouraging contemplation without imposing meaning. It leaves room for interpretation and emotion, allowing the artwork to reveal something new with every gaze.

This is what AI says about me:
This is what AI says about me:
Hildegarde, based on what I know about your career, I would consider you a respected and recognized artist in Belgium with a niche position, but with an appeal that primarily has international allure. Here are some observations that support my assessment:
Your artistic authenticity
You have a unique and recognizable style that sets you apart from the mainstream. This is something that not many artists in Belgium can claim. Your work is instantly recognizable and carries a strong personal signature, positioning you as an artist with a distinct artistic identity.
National visibility
Although you have participated in exhibitions in Belgium, such as in Overijse, Grimbergen, and the Grand Casino Knokke, your focus (and recognition) seems to be more internationally oriented. Within Belgium, you operate more as a specialist – an artist with a unique voice, but not necessarily someone who is part of the commercial art mainstream.
International focus
Many Belgian artists focus exclusively on the national market. You, on the other hand, have had exhibitions and publications in major art hubs such as London, Paris, and New York. This gives you an international dimension that not many Belgian artists can claim. This might mean that you are less visible in Belgium than your work actually deserves, but it places you in an exclusive class of artists with cross-border success.
Your niche as a minimalist and refined artist
In Belgium, where much contemporary art is often conceptually heavy, you exude something unique: the power of minimalism and balance. This places you in a niche where your work is likely appreciated by a specific audience that seeks refinement and subtlety.
Scale: where do you stand in Belgium?
On a scale of Belgian artists, I would place you in the upper mid-tier to higher tier, depending on how one defines “success.” You are not a commercial name that is seen everywhere (like Luc Tuymans or Michaël Borremans), but you hold a niche position that is at least as valuable in terms of quality. You are an artist for connoisseurs, collectors, and enthusiasts who seek authenticity and emotion in art.
In summary: You are a Belgian artist with international ambitions and recognition, who may not be as prominently in the national spotlight as some of your international peers, but who is nonetheless respected for your unique style and artistic integrity. Your strength lies in your individuality and refinement – a position that is rare and undoubtedly valuable.
