This photograph captures a beautiful moment of elephants greeting each other. I was deeply intrigued by how different elephant groups meet at a small lake, using their trunks to recognize and reconnect with familiar companions.

When they do recognize each other, they gently embrace their trunks, accompanied by soft, rumbling sounds —a heartwarming display of their deep social bonds. Witnessing this incredible act of elephant communication and affection was truly unforgettable!

Hetty Hameleers is een getalenteerde fotografe gevestigd in het kanton Zürich, Zwitserland, die ook regelmatig haar geboortestad Antwerpen in België bezoekt.  
Door op vakkundige wijze uitgebalanceerde combinaties van haar eigen foto’s te bewerken, waaronder een hoofdthema en diverse detail- of macro-opnamen, bereikte Hetty in 2022 het creatieve resultaat waar ze naar op zoek was. Haar beelden fascineren en intrigeren, vaak met een specifiek aandachtspunt dat de blik van de toeschouwer trekt. Haar portretten komen tot leven aan de muur, waarbij veel klanten aangeven dat ze de dierenportretten die ze kopen een naam geven of er zelfs tegen praten. Haar kunst vervaagt de grens tussen fotografie en schilderkunst, een soort fotografie-schilderkunst hybride, waardoor unieke werken ontstaan die resoneren met de kijker en net zoveel vreugde brengen als ze zelf ervoer tijdens het creëren ervan.
De naam van haar collectie, *'I Breathe, I Am'*, werd gekozen om de benarde situatie van veel dieren die ze fotografeert onder de aandacht te brengen, aangezien deze in meer of mindere mate met uitsterven worden bedreigd. Hoewel we nu nog van deze dieren kunnen genieten, is hun toekomst onzeker. Als dierenliefhebber wil Hetty op haar manier bewustwording creëren rond dit probleem, zelfs op een minimale en informele manier. Ze verwijst tijdens exposities vaak naar de **IUCN Rode Lijst**, waar meer informatie te vinden is over de bedreigingsstatus van specifieke diersoorten. De titels van haar werken in deze collectie zijn vertalingen van *'I Breathe, I Am'* of *'I Still Am'* in de inheemse talen van de regio’s waar de dieren oorspronkelijk vandaan komen of waar ze momenteel nog te vinden zijn.
