Henri-Edmond Cross was born Henri-Edmond-Joseph Delacroix on May 20, 1856. He died on May 16, 1910, in France. Most people think of him as a master of Neo-Impressionism, and he was a big part of the movement's second phase. He had a big effect on artists like Henri Matisse and many others. His work was very important to the rise of Fauvism.Early portraits and still lifes by Cross were painted in the dark colors of Realism. In 1881, he changed his name to "Henri Cross" because he didn't want to be confused with the famous Romantic painter Eugène Delacroix. He did this by shortening and anglicizing his birth name, which was "Henri Delacroix." In French, "croix" means "cross."Cross helped start the Société des Artistes Indépendants in 1884. It was made up of artists who didn't like how the official Salon ran, and it held exhibitions without prizes that were not judged. There, he met and became friends with artists like Georges Seurat, Albert Dubois-Pillet, and Charles Angrand who were part of the Neo-Impressionist movement.Cross went to a hospital in Paris in 1909 because he had cancer. In January 1910, he went back to Saint-Clair. On May 16, 1910, four days before his 54th birthday, he died of cancer there.
