Gustave Courbet

France
Artiste (Peinture)
1819 - 1877

Gustave Courbet was one of the most important French realist artists of the 19th century. He was born on June 10, 1819, and died on December 31, 1877. He was known for his unique style of painting, especially in the 1840s. The impressionists and cubists were influenced by him. Even though he went to art studios when he was young, he mostly taught himself to paint by copying the work of the greats. He didn't think that the old ways of making art were good. Some of the things he painted were still lifes, naked people, landscapes, and scenes of hunting. He didn't like Romanticism in art and insisted on painting only what he could see. He was a brave and independent artist who didn't follow the rules of the time. Usually, only historical and mythological subjects were shown on a large scale, but he often used large canvas to show everyday people and activities. His later work had a style that was more sensual. He often got into trouble because of how rebellious he was. He was a socialist, and he took part in political activities that got him sent to prison. Later, he moved to Switzerland on his own and stayed there until his death in 1877.
