Gérard Priault

The theme of Priault's work strictly is neither that which apparently is represented, nor the manner of its representation, but arises from the painter's use of each of these categories as a vehicle to create an autonomous time.

Upon viewing a Priault jungle, for exemple, it is obvious that the painter avoids any time marker that might situate the scene in an identifiable past, present, or future. But this fact is no less true of his cities and “ruinsâ€ﾝ which pose a further, proleptic temporal plane, i.e., the prospect oflooking t the past frorn a vantage in the future.
By placing in flux the time of an image, implicitly Priault renders equally fluid the viewer's temporal situation with respect to the image, since, clearly, if what the viewer sees is in the past, then he is in the future with respect to it; but if the image depicts the future, then he is in the pastwith respect to it (A proleptic vision of the
image poses further variations).
