Francien Krieg

Francien Krieg is a Dutch artist and lives and works in The Haque.In 1998 she finished the royal academie of art in The Haque and since then she has been painting the human body.Also during academie period she had a big fascination for everything involving the anatomy of the body.In this period she made human skins, meatforms and animationfilms with faces falling apart.
After acdemie she went to the Free academie were she started painting and quickly after she had started she had her first exhibitions.Now she is known for her style of painting , were she surprises us with her unusual look on the body.
She has het atelier in The Hague and you are always welcome to come and take a look!

about the work of Francien Krieg

the paintings of Francien Krieg show the body as a silent and hard to get through mass.Monumental bodies which are depersonalized and seems to be within themselves because most of the time they don't have a face.
But even if they do have a face , this face is not clear and with no meaning.Krieg exposes the body as a thing, as a meat becoming mystery.To emphasize this depersonication she puts the body within the painting in all kinds of impossible poses and radically cuts of parts.These bodies have nothing to say , these bodies don't really do anything.They are nothing more but naked facts, who show themselves from all sides.They are the subject of Kriegs investigation.

sometimes she falls into abstraction, or extreme surrealisme from the body.But these more technical explorations don't have her interest for to long.Again and again she comes back to her basic fascination about this thing the body.It doesn't seem to matter if it is her body or from someone else.Her own body is just as weird as someone elses body.We don't posses our body we more seem to be captured in it.

This from curiousity born fascination started early in her academic period.The body as a cocoon, empty cover, death matery, it's decay and mortality was her interest.This she showed in a serie of sculptures, which funny enough also didn't had a long life.She made the sculptures from materials which didn't last long, like meat, or because she destryoed them after a short period of time.
After all she worked out her concept so no need to keep it any longer.

When Krieg started to paint the body she added an interesting aspect to her work.
Beside the mysterious and thing like caracter of the body, now also appeared the point of view.
By using the perspective she shows that someone is watching.This is an important change in her works.In her sculptures she shows the body as a changeable thing, a cocoon and dead materie.But in her paintings it is clearly that someone is watching.And this viewer is standing excacly on the place of the person watching the painting.Subtle there is a change going from fact to vision.The fictief viewer sees the body as a thing as a passive materie.
This element of a subjectivity, of seeing as, creates an opening to a more personal relation with this strange object the body.

Although the body is the subject of all Kriegs paintings, it is about the spirit.The spirit moves away from the body and looks at it from a distance and sees the absurdity of it.We look through the eyes of the spirit and the way the spirit looks at the body shows a certain world image.In this world image spirit and body seems to be in contrast with eachother.For the body the spirit is to restless and makes him tired.Out of protest the body slows down, becomes passive and dead.Then the spirit has a problem because although his ideas are great , it needs the body to function.Without the body there is no connection with the material world.Without the body the spirit cannot connect and has no intimicy.Without a body anything is possible but not reeel.
When the spirit realises that the body is the only acces to reality then he can make his desires come true.Tehn the body is no longer dead materie but living reality.

Krieg shows this curiousity from the spirit to his body.She is looking for a fundamental contact between body and spirit.This is why the painting of Krieg has obsesive sides and is never empty.
It is her idealisitc longing for the spirit to be in balance with the body.Till this happens the body and spirit will be in conflict with eachother and this is what motivates Krieg to paint.
