A year is going away and a new one is starting, as everything in life. I consider this artwork a symbolic representation of the stages of life, explored through surreal elements that intertwine memory, time, and the human experience. Each figure and object carries a layer of meaning that reflects a different phase of our journey.

On the left, the black marble statue of a woman supports the gramophone, which produces delicate bubbles floating skyward. This symbolizes the nurturing figure of a mother, the giver of life and the anchor of creation. The bubbles, fragile and ephemeral, represent the dreams and aspirations that we are imbued with at birth, sent into the world with the hope they will thrive.

At the center, the hourglass cradles the figure of a small child, encapsulated in a sphere. This is childhood—the pure and formative stage of innocence. The flowing sand reminds us that this period is fleeting, though foundational, shaping the memories and experiences that remain with us forever.

To the right, the leprechaun introduces the complexities of adulthood. With a strange device extracting green liquid from the earth and transforming it into vapor, he symbolizes the temptations, influences, and challenges of maturity. The liquid he offers to the child represents the decisions, desires, and external forces we encounter during this pivotal phase, which define the trajectory of our lives.

Finally, the figure on the wheeled board serves as a poignant reflection on old age. At first glance, the figure appears to be a young boy, but closer inspection reveals the characteristics of an older person. This duality captures the cyclical nature of life—how, in our elder years, we often return to a childlike state, rediscovering simplicity, dependence, and wonder. The act of pointing upward hints at reflection, longing, and the enduring pursuit of dreams, even as we near the end of our journey.

The entire composition is tied together by the ever-present theme of time, embodied in the hourglass and the surrounding environment. Life flows continuously, with its stages intricately connected, each influencing the next. As the artist, this piece allowed me to reflect on the passage of time, the enduring nature of memories, and the forces that shape us across life’s spectrum.
