Title: Girl with Flowered Dress
Acrylic on wooden panel, 60 × 80 cm

This piece captures a moment of suspended awareness—a girl caught between the softness of memory and the strangeness of a dream. She is still, but her expression suggests inner movement, a kind of quiet revolt. Her floral dress blooms brightly against a night sky of surreal mushrooms, as if her body were grounded in nature while her thoughts float elsewhere.

The colors are intense, but not loud. Her gaze is open, almost curious, as though she sees something the viewer cannot. The flowers on her dress feel both decorative and symbolic—each one a soft explosion against the structured folds of her clothing. Around her, the mushroom-like shapes rise like sentinels from another world, blurring the line between whimsy and symbolism.

I painted this on wood to let the texture of the surface subtly interact with the color. Acrylic allowed for crisp edges and layered transparencies, giving her skin and surroundings a strange, glowing depth. The process was slow and deliberate—unlike my more intuitive pieces, this one was built shape by shape, until her presence became undeniable.

She is not a portrait of someone I know. She is something closer to a feeling I couldn’t place—an echo of youth, a trace of softness meeting something surreal. As with all my work, I don’t expect clarity. I only hope the viewer feels the same pause I did while painting.

Enrico Malatesta is a visual and digital artist whose work explores the emotional undercurrents beneath abstract form. Born in 1953, he came to art through a long process of observation, experimentation, and lived experience rather than through formal routes or art world expectations. His practice has evolved over time, shaped by a desire to give space to what resists being named—an image, a feeling, a memory not yet clear.

His artworks often emerge without a fixed plan, beginning from a moment of tension or a fragment of intuition. Through composition and color, they become quiet structures where emotion is allowed to surface. There is no message to decode, no story to follow—just the trace of something honest, unresolved, and human.

Working mostly in abstract visual language, Enrico seeks not to impress but to connect. Each piece is an attempt to make visible the kind of emotion we usually carry in silence.
