Title: One but Two
50 × 70 cm – Acrylic on Fabriano paper

This work explores a recurring tension in my practice: how we hold multiple selves at once. “One but Two” is not a depiction of duality in the traditional sense—it’s more about cohabitation. Two faces share a single geometry, but they do not blend. They align and drift, overlap and part, like thoughts caught in emotional crosscurrents.

Each form is deliberately constructed, yet each carries the imprint of a gesture that wasn’t overthought. I didn’t begin this piece with a plan. Instead, it grew from a quiet, unresolved emotion—something I couldn’t name, but felt needed space to become visible. The process was intuitive and layered, guided more by response than direction.

I chose Fabriano paper for its physical and emotional sensitivity. It responds to every pressure, every line. The acrylic medium allowed me to move quickly and correct nothing—what’s here is a record of choices as they happened. The palette is vivid and tense: oranges pulse against deep blues; clean lines divide shifting patterns. It's not harmony I sought, but presence.

The faces suggest identity, but also emotion—grief, curiosity, disconnection, tenderness. There is no clear reading, and that’s intentional. This work resists narrative. It prefers to be felt before it is understood.

In the end, “One but Two” is not about resolution. It’s about coexisting with contradictions—emotional, visual, human. As with much of my work, I don’t offer an answer. Just a space where something unspoken might surface.

Enrico Malatesta is a visual and digital artist whose work explores the emotional undercurrents beneath abstract form. Born in 1953, he came to art through a long process of observation, experimentation, and lived experience rather than through formal routes or art world expectations. His practice has evolved over time, shaped by a desire to give space to what resists being named—an image, a feeling, a memory not yet clear.

His artworks often emerge without a fixed plan, beginning from a moment of tension or a fragment of intuition. Through composition and color, they become quiet structures where emotion is allowed to surface. There is no message to decode, no story to follow—just the trace of something honest, unresolved, and human.

Working mostly in abstract visual language, Enrico seeks not to impress but to connect. Each piece is an attempt to make visible the kind of emotion we usually carry in silence.
