Figure montante de la scène artistique chilienne, Paula de Sominihac produit des oeuvres singulières où vie privée et questionnement artistique sont étroitement liés. Avec pour principal objet la terre, son travail s'inscrit dans une perspective de l'archéologie contemporaine. L'artiste s'attache en effet plus aux processus de production qu'aux objets eux mêmes, systématisant l'étude de l'activité matérielle comme un champ spécifique de l'art et de l'anthropologie.
Son approche artistique se réfère au Triangle Culinaire de Claude Levi-Strauss : modelage de la terre, cuisson par le feu, obtention d'un récipient. Elle s'appuie également sur l'analyse dynamique de la technologie, terme proposé par André Leroi Gourhan, qui s'attache aux mouvements opérés sur le matériau.
En même temps Paula de Solminihac fait une archéologie de sa propre expérience. Sa vie et son travail sont intrinsèquement liés. Elle tient un journal où elle prend soin de noter ses réflexions sur son vécu quotidien et dessine dans les espaces laissés vides. Ce journal, sorte de carte mentale, devient lui-même objet de ses investigations.
