Coco Vewenda, a contemporary artist from the Democratic Republic of Congo, lives and works in Belgium. After completing six years of high school, Vewenda earned a diploma in sculpture from the Institute of Fine Arts in Kinshasa. Presently, he is engaged in evening studies of Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in the city of Brussels.

Central to Vewenda's artistic expression are the themes of modernity, tradition, and transparency. Positioned between tradition and modernity, he strive to create contemporary art while drawing inspiration from primitive African art. Rooted in a desire to connect with his culture, origins, and sources, Vewenda navigates towards a contemporary worldview. His exploration extends to the relationship between ancient tribes, the artifacts embodying his traditions, and the geographical spaces he inhabit.

Politics intertwines profoundly with Vewenda's artistry. Presently, he craft transparent sculptures as a visual metaphor for the transparent relationship necessary between the people and their leaders. Emphasizing the sovereignty of the people, Vewenda advocates for transparency, asserting that individuals have the right to see and understand the trajectory of their future.

Further inquiries into the correlation between primitive African art and contemporary African art fuel Vewenda's creative exploration. He contemplate whether African art should remain entrenched in tradition or embrace contemporary realities. Drawing from a diverse array of materials such as iron bars, wire, ropes, knitting wire, metal plates, and leather, Vewenda finds inspiration in the objects of primitive African art, including calabashes, hunting instruments, decorative motifs, and symbols.

Through his art, Coco Vewenda engages in a profound dialogue, weaving together threads of tradition, modernity, politics, and cultural identity, ultimately challenging preconceptions and advocating for transparency, sovereignty, and the evolution of African art in contemporary contexts.
