About the author
Andrei Overweel was born in New Zealand in 1974 and is currently living in the capital Wellington. He is of Dutch and Scottish descent.
The artist started painting when he was 5 years old and over time he has developed his own style, under the guidance of respected New Zealand painters and mentors.
After attending high-school Andrei went to art school in Dunedin, New Zealand, where his interest for portraiture started to develop. However, his highly original and decorative style was largely self taught. His travels through Asia and short residence in China have greatly affected his interest in detail, as well as his interest in a delicate balance between the traditional oriental art and western aesthetics. One such example is the introduction of gold leaf into his portraits in 2005, adding to an ethereal and timeless quality of the work.
Andrei's latest work was mainly inspired by his ongoing interest in Greek, Egyptian and Japanese mythologies and by theatrical works from a similar period. He paints in an allegorical manner, deliberately intending pensive overtones that go beyond the subject represented.
The artist is represented by several galleries in New Zealand now exhibits throughout the country. In the future, it is his aim to show his work in the United States and Europe.
