Charles Gavin
Charles Gavin artist of rare talent using powerful imagery and intensive colour in his earlier works more recently with an ever increasing subtlety combined with a renewed emphasis on a graphic approach, has developed a unique and instantly recognisable style.
Born in Edinburgh, Scotland he went to Paris, France and lived there from 1968 -1972. He was accepted into L'École des Beaux Arts but chose to study independently which led him to the discovery of a powerful expressionist instinct within himself. He looked to Germany for the rudiments of his visual language, at the same time becoming aware of the literary works of the Chilean poet, Pablo Neruda. The lyrical and political poems made a strong impression on him and became the source of much of his work for more than 20 years.
He returned to Britain in 1973 and lived in and around London where the influence of Neruda's works began to bare fruition. This was followed by a ten year stay in Plymouth, England. The move proved to be a prolific time for Gavin; he exhibited frequently, and the majority of the Neruda inspired works were done during this period. Gavin wisely eschewed the option of illustration and established his own pictorial authority.
1991 on the move again this time to Spain. He spent some years working in his studio with prespective art college students and it was a period of reflection, ruthless self-examination and citicism for him. A time of diversity and sylistic shifts meant that he was turning his back on already established choice of subject matter and method of working. He produced a series of large and small collages with new monotypes/mixed media works. Gavin found himself returning to his first passion for printmaking and combining a simplicity of approach and economy of line paintings began to take shape in various formats. His new works are playful and profound, colourful and monotone. Gavin continues his artistic adventures producing endurable images which many could live with.
