Joëlle Esso est une artiste aux multiples talents: chanteuse de renommée internationale, comédienne, mais aussi illustratrice. Tout chemin artistique mène à l'édition, pourrait-on dire.
Après une enfance passée au Cameroun et une adolescence en Côte d’Ivoire, elle arrive à Paris au milieu des années 80. Une formation en Ecole d’Arts Graphiques puis un cursus en Histoire de l’Art à l’Université la mèneront à choisir l’illustration dans un style proche de la BD parallèlement à une carrière dans le monde du spectacle en tant que choriste à partir de 1988 ; de nombreuses tournées avec divers groupes africains la conduiront en Colombie, aux USA, en Guinée, au Canada. Cours Simon (théâtre) puis cours de chant. Membre de la chorale des Chérubins, son efficacité en studio lui vaut de régulières participations comme choriste aux enregistrements de Kassav’, Barbara, Céline Dion, Arielle Dombasle, Yannick Noah, pour ne citer que ceux-là. En concert avec Manu Dibango, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Jean-Michel Jarre, Nicoletta, Carol Fredericks, la choriste se découvre une nouvelle envie : chanter en solo.
En 2003, épaulée par les meilleurs musiciens de studio parisiens, Joëlle Esso enregistre son premier album, « Mungo ! ». Un album afro-parisien, mélange de tradition camerounaise teinté de blues et de gospel. L'album sera la B.O du film "Les Saignantes" de JP Bekolo Obama.
