Het boeket van Claire doet de fantasie op hol slaan. Heeft Claire het prachtige, feestelijke boeket cadeau gekregen en zo ja: van wie dan wel? Is Claire de naam van de gulle geefster? Ter gelegenheid van een verjaardag, een huwelijk of het behalen van een diploma? Is het een boeket voor een dame of voor een heer? Heeft Claire misschien iets goed te maken of …. is het gewoon voor haarzelf?
Het verschil tussen een bosje bloemen en een boeket is groot. Het eerste is gauw meegepakt; het tweede wordt zorgvuldig samengesteld op soort en kleur. Er zit vaak een bandje om de stelen, zodat het geheel in het gelid blijft, en het wordt verpakt in gekleurd papier of cellofaan, met een bijpassend lintje er aan. Is het boeket kant en klaar afkomstig uit een chique winkel, of is Claire zo’n vrouw die de bloemen, stuk voor stuk, uitzoekt?
Past het kleurrijke boeket in het interieur waarin het terecht komt? De ontvanger heeft het op de grond gezet; een goede plek voor een groot boeket. Een bloemstuk van bovenaf schilderen is ongewoon. Van het boeket is slechts een deel te zien, in close-up. De bloemen wijzen alle kanten uit, waardoor het schilderij heel dynamisch is geworden. Ella Joosten (Baarlo, 1954) creëerde een heel bijzondere compositie.
De ruimte tussen de bloemen vormt de donkere achtergrond, waartegen de, vaak complementaire, kleuren mooi afsteken.
De bloemen zijn laag over laag, met acrylverf, glad geschilderd. Door de vele kleurnuances en de helderheid is het net alsof er een lichtje achter brandt. Versterkt door de duidelijke, strakke contourlijnen, wordt een associatie opgeroepen met glas in lood. De amaryllis en de anthurium, de rozen en de lelies zijn realistisch, maar tegelijkertijd gestileerd, vorm gegeven, waardoor het stuk spannend is geworden.
De vraag in welk seizoen het werk is geschilderd, heeft – interessant genoeg - anno 2008 geen betekenis voor de toeschouwer. In de 17e eeuw – dé eeuw van de bloemstillevens in de Nederlandse kunst – was dat juist wel het geval. Bloemstillevens werden vaak geschilderd om het verglijden van de tijd te verbeelden. Zo’n stuk was opgebouwd uit bloemen die, in Nederland, in heel verschillende seizoenen bloeien. Alle bloemen werden individueel getekend op het moment dat ze op hun hoogtepunt waren, en later in het atelier tot een geheel, op doek, gecomponeerd. Voor Joosten is deze werkwijze niet noodzakelijk meer; bloemen komen tegenwoordig van heinde en ver.
De kunstenaar maakt een boeiende combinatie, die je niet vaak aantreft. Behalve de fascinatie voor de soort, spreken de verschillen in vorm haar aan.
Claire’s Bouquet maakt deel uit van een serie; het ene stuk vormt de bron van inspiratie voor een volgend werk. Als alle boeketten even schitterend zijn als dat van Claire, wordt het heel moeilijk kiezen!
