Hand Painted letter S with watercolor, gilding and Chinese inks on high quality 100% cotton Italian paper. Foliate initial S with animal (lion’s) head against gold background in decorated frame. It's a copy of the initial from psalter for the use of the diocese of Würzburg (calendar, litany); written and illuminated in Franconia, Germany, possibly in the monastery of Komburg, ca. 1250. The initial is at the beginning of Psalm 68 - Salvum me fac Deus quoniam intraverunt aquae usque ad animam meam....The work is part of the collection of the The Morgan Library & Museum.
