This is a conundrum in modern civilization. Young parents, their bodies still ripe and enticing, their drives still attention consuming, but the fruit of their earlier lusts is running about, poking their eyes and ears into everything around them as they explore this world which for them is so new and filled with surprises.
A glance that is met, a pleasant moment, the brush of soft skin on skin, a kind word, a secondary stimulant, a glass of wine ... a thousand unpredictable accidents may stir within them the renewed desire for their lover's embrace. Just the fleeting moment of appreciation of their partners nearness, the memory of past pleasures and yearning to know them again, any of these things may stir within them a rebirth of that attraction that first brought them onto this path in life. But the excitement of rediscovery may suddenly be cut-off by that high-pitched question, "What are you two doing?"
In earlier, less stable conditions of social organization, in less prosperous times when all of the family slept and lived in the same room, necessity found a different, more open attitude to the continued needs of young parents. Carnal desires were dealt with in the presence of others because there was not as readily an alternative. Children and elders were often serenaded to sleep to the sounds of gasping and moaning, etcetera, coming from the parent's bedding, sometimes with children in the same bed, and this was natural, a part of ordinary life.
Prosperity brought privacy and the invasion of privacy. Separate rooms brought the risk that strange noises would draw curious ears to the source of the disturbance and unveil to them mysterious sights they weren't accustomed to.
So, parents began to fear exposing children to things they could not understand because the no longer needed to understand them until sometime later ...
Into the difficulties of maintaining the attractions that brought them together to give life to those prying eyes is added the difficulty of keeping the nature of their attraction secret from those eyes, and occasionally, failing to do so.
On the other hand, going back to making love in the presence of one's children and elders might not be the most appealing alternative.
I suspect that being more open and honest about sex from early on in a child's upbringing might alleviate most of this issue, "This is what sex looks like, but it is a private thing and if you come across us having sex, please respect our privacy." But that raises other issues, needing other solutions.
This image raises the issue and suggests each of us should think about how we would resolve it.
The worst solution would be to have government bureaucrats pick a solution for us and take it upon themselves to change the way we choose to deal with it.
