I'm a self-taught photographer with a proclivity for fine art. Before diving into photography, I focused on visual expression through graphite and charcoal at the Johannesburg Art Foundation.
My photography journey began with capturing dynamic performances of musicians, while at the same time teaching myself how to portray color, line and form using light painting and floral subject matters. Back then I used TV screens, lighters, and sparklers to light objects in interesting and affordable ways at night (while my 2 year old slept). This period was followed by two decades of honing my skills as a media photographer where I specialised in magazine covers, photojournalism, food, fashion, and travel.
The unprecedented challenges of lockdown prompted a significant shift in my artistic focus, propelling me towards fine art photography. Today, I utilize my expertise and creativity to produce evocative visual narratives that go beyond the boundaries of traditional photography. Lately, I've been particularly captivated by long-exposure photography of flowers at night (Suton Illume).
My fine art photography covers a wide range of subjects. In addition to my work with botanicals in Suton Illume, my portfolio includes expansive nature scenes presented as large panoramics, revealing the grandeur and delicate intricacies of the natural world. I also have a keen eye for sincere moments in street photography, where the urban landscape serves as a canvas for human stories. Moreover, I specialise in candid portraits that capture the raw, unguarded essence of my subjects.
The longer I observe something, the deeper it becomes. Whether I shift my perspective, view it in the soft light of dusk, or return the following day, by simply being patient and allowing myself to look and wait, I'm entranced by something indescribable. Nearly everything transforms into a captivating subject, and my goal is to capture this unexplainable sense of wonder.
