В древнем Риме, по сути, не было своей философии - только влияние Греции (где философия была). Были стоики и эпикурейцы - первые были за долг перед обществом и так далее, а вторые - за жизнь для себя. Но это просто типовые умонастроения, они существуют везде и всегда. Ещё были неоплатоники - тоже умонастроение - прекраснодушная, идеалистическая болтовня и не более. И эклектики - эрудиты с эклектичной кашей в голове. Ну, и, конечно, были скептики... Все мы таковы...

In ancient Rome, in fact, there was no philosophy of its own - only the influence of Greece (where philosophy existed). There were Stoics and Epicureans - the former were for duty to society and so on, and the latter were for living for themselves. But these are just typical state of mind; they exist everywhere and always. There were also Neoplatonists - same typical state of mind - beautiful-hearted, idealistic chatter and nothing more. And eclectics - polymaths with an eclectic mess in their heads. Well, and, of course, there were skeptics... We are all like that...

Не знал, что Греция ослабла и погибла из-за столетней междуусобной войны между Афинами (с союзниками) и Спартой (с союзниками). Афины были мощнее экономически (опиралась на ремесла и торговлю), а Спарта была сильна в военном отношении (это латифундисты с рабами). Можно оценить уровень "просвещенности" Греции - бодались как тупые быки и злобные звери...

I didn’t know that Greece weakened and died due to a hundred years of internecine war between Athens (with its allies) and Sparta (with its allies). В Спарте выбрасывали в пропасть слабых детей - такими нравами могло похвастаться не всякое дикое племя в Африке! А там было ещё много подобных обычаев... Или они всё-таки были больше легендой, рекламой, а на деле исполнялись только в какой-то короткий период?

Ясно также, что не будь в Греции огромных залежей белого мрамора высочайшего качества, то не было бы и "прекрасного" греческого искусства, шикарных дворцов и прочего. В частности, такой мрамор пропускает в себя свет на 20 сантиметров, отчего всё переливается. Именно этот мрамор находится в фундаменте, в истоке всех западных цивилизаций, именно как дешёвую замену ему изобрели и используют пластмассу. (А гранит - это символ варварской брутальности? Мрамор - это женское тело, а гранит - мужское...)
Мрамор, видимо, не слишком тверд и из него не так трудно делать те же статуи...

(Is granite a symbol of barbaric brutality? Marble is a female body, and granite is a male one...)
Marble, apparently, is not too hard and it is not so difficult to make the same statues from it...

Древний Рим явно подражал и Спарте и Афинам - у них всегда была военщина как в Спарте - но все войны, захваты и грабежи осуществлялись ради красивой жизни - как в Афинах (в Спарте царил аскетизм).
Не знал, что именно военщина привела к тотальной нестабильности поздней римской империи (генералы поочередно захватывали власть) и к диктатурам императоров "золотого века" (приходилось держать вояк под жёстким контролем). Т.е. без греков-афинян никакой цивилизации в Риме бы не было?! Но греков-афинян не могло не быть... Любопытно всё же, что красоты цивилизации действуют даже на вояк и генералов (а что, все эти бусы соблазняли и африканских дикарей) Они и спартанцев наверняка соблазняли, но там "братская" ревность и конкуренция застилала глаза... Цивилизация - это баба в вещах - а против баб могут устоять только истинные интеллектуалы... (На востоке прячут баб под паранджой - так собак держат в намордниках. Мужланы не могут устоять перед бабой - и надо или самому прятаться или её прятать)

Ancient Rome clearly imitated both Sparta and Athens - they always had a military like in Sparta - but all the wars, conquests and robberies were carried out for the sake of a beautiful life - like in Athens (asceticism reigned in Sparta).
I didn’t know that it was the military that led to the total instability of the late Roman Empire (the generals took turns seizing power) and to the dictatorships of the “golden age” emperors (the soldiers had to be kept under strict control). It is curious, however, that the beauty of civilization affects even warriors and generals (and what, all these beads also seduced and African savages). They probably seduced and the Spartans, but there “brotherly” jealousy and competition blinded the eyes... Civilization is a woman in things - and only true intellectuals can resist women... (In the east they hide women under burqas - like they keep dogs muzzled. The louts cannot resist a woman - and you either have to hide yourself or hide her)

(В римских провинциях независимые государства начали возникать ещё в 3 веке, потом возникла вторая столица в Константинополе, где 325 году христианство стало государственной религией - и так далее и тому подобное...)
