Née à Montréal, un 29 janvier 1954, en plein hiver, Sylvie Artôt est née au Canada. De père Belge et mère Française, architecte et artiste peintre, elle a grandi en observant sa mère peindre et son père dessiner ses projets de maison. Ce qui lui a probablement donné le goût de créer des décors en 3 dimensions. De retour en Belgique, elle a vécu à Bruxelles, étudié la gravure, dans une école privée de préparation à la Cambre, et c’est à 19 ans qu’elle a commencé sa vie de peintre dans un atelier de décors pour les théâtres et autres endroits publics. Elle y apprendra l’art d’utiliser les matières et de travailler en grand.
Ni mondaine, ni attachée à la coterie d’un décorateur, Sylvie Artôt est une artiste. A la manière des grands « fresquistes » de la renaissance Italienne. Sans doute plus inventive et plus pratique. Elle travaille avec une peinture acrylique à la caséine, fait tous ses tons elle-même, ce qui confère à l’œuvre, un aspect mat et velouté et des couleurs qui sont les siennes, et qu’on reconnaît.
Son travail ? Une somptueuse illusion alliée à une perfection de la main. Les « panoramiques » de Sylvie Artôt sont différents. Non qu'elle ne sache pas les faire, mais elle propose mieux. Un dialogue évolutif entre ce qui existe déjà, et une atmosphère à long terme. Et la volonté de corriger une imperfection architecturale, aérer une pièce, élargir la vue.
Habitant à Nyons en Drôme Provençale depuis 20 ans, dans un cadre magnifique, elle continue à faire du trompe - l’œil, mais également des tableaux.
