Daniel Richter is a prominent contemporary German painter known for his large-scale, expressive works that fuse abstraction and figuration. Born in Eutin in 1962, he first emerged from Hamburg’s countercultural punk scene in the 1980s, where he created record covers and posters. He later studied under Werner Büttner at the Hochschule für bildende Künste in Hamburg, developing a distinctive style that evolved from vibrant abstractions to politically charged figurative paintings. His canvases often explore themes of protest, migration, war, and surveillance, rendered in explosive colors and theatrical compositions that reflect both psychological intensity and social critique.
Over the years, Daniel Richter has maintained a strong presence on the international art scene, exhibiting in renowned institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark.
