Hypatia was a famous ancient Woman Polymath who taught Philosophy, Astronomy, and Mathematics in the Egyptian city of Alexandria.
She was born and lived in Alexandria, Egypt (370 - 415AD). Hypatia was murdered by a mob of Christians in March of 415 AD.
She died as a "Martyr for Philosophy."
This historical aspects of this painting were researched extensively and include various late Hellenistic and Roman period themes and images.
In the background there are depictions of the HEPTASOPHY, the Seven Sages of Greece that included: Thales of Miletus, Pittacus of Mytilene, Bias of Priene, Solon of Athens, Chilon of Sparta, Cleobulus of Lindos, Periander of Corinth...
A large sculpture of the god APSIS is represented by the sculpture of a cow behind Hypatia.
On the table we see a brass Astrolabe and a ceramic sculpture of the local Graeco-Egyptian god SERAPIS.
On the bottom side of the table structure there is a depiction of a Mithraic relief sculpture with Cult of Mithras images of the god slaughtering a bull.
Behind the seated Hypatia stands a large marble sculpture of Dionysus, the Greek the god of wine-making, orchards and fruit, vegetation, fertility, festivity, insanity, ritual madness, religious ecstasy, and theater...
The intricate mosaic flooring is based on period mosaic samples that were recovered from various archaeologic excavations.
