The Andalusian International Artists Group () is a private, voluntary, not for profit, self help group of like minded artists located in southern Spain.
Two of their members, Bettina Eriksen from Denmark and Roger Cummiskey from Ireland, have paintings on display at the Galeria restaurante LUCIA, in Fuengirola until Feb 27th - daily from 1.30.

Presents New ArtWorks, an exhibition of recent paintings by
Roger Cummiskey and Bettina Eriksen,

Cummiskey’s new work continues his interpretations into the writings and wanderings of James Joyce. In New ArtWorks, however, the artist articulates a search for an individual’s identity stressing difference, solitude, and isolation through the depiction of figures and poetic interpretations from which he will read a few of the poems at the inauguration as well as explaining the background to his interpretations. He is a recognised Joycean scholar.
Roger Cummiskey’s use of drawing and painting on paper in watercolour is considered by many to be masterful. He “employs delicate lines that seem to touch the surface – just long enough to form the silhouette, record a bodily gesture, or suggest an emotional expression.” Neutral pigments become the backgrounds for such depictions, allowing the characters and the relationship that is established between them to suggest that the situation is actually a platform to reflect on the realities of sameness and difference, through non-narrative moments void of spatial context. Earth elements reappear throughout his oeuvre in the form of objects, backgrounds, clothing or lack of it, insinuating the basic instincts of the Authors in their writings. In the words of the artist, “Sometimes the imaginary doubles as an ideal companion to the reading/re-reading of all or part of the Authors’ works in a modern day setting.”
Bettina Eriksen´s paintings use a celebration of colour that evokes the emotion of the Tango and the sensuality of the dance with her loose employment of reds, yellows and blacks that make her paintings instantly recognisable and individualistic, full of movement and desire.
Bettina and Roger are members of the Andalusian International Artists Group (), formed just over a year ago to assist Artists from diverse backgrounds around Europe and residing in the Provence of Andalucía either permanently or temporarily in the promotion of their artistic careers, to enhance the knowledge and skill that will assist them in their careers as Artists, to promote best standards as Artists between people from diverse backgrounds and to help them to seek out opportunities for exhibiting their works. Each of the artists involved has been successful in their own fields and countries and therefore is expected to be able to make a vital contribution to the group as a whole and play an integral role in its future. “We are extremely proud of our progress to date” says founding member Roger Cummiskey, “all of the artists work on behalf of the group on a voluntary basis, giving up their valuable free time to the benefit of the whole group. The spirit of co-operation is without doubt the best aspect of our small organization and will ensure that we continue for a very long time”.
The AIA-Group is always on the look out for new and exiting exhibition places.
Bettina Eriksen was born in Naestved in southern Denmark in 1966 and was educated at the international Authorised Cidesco institute in Copenhagen.
Throughout her life she has always have been a very active person, taking part in all kinds of sport as well as teaching rhythmic dancing. She has always had an ongoing desire to create new handcraft whenever time allowed, including painting pictures.
Bettina is an autodidact artist having received no formal artist training. She is a very strong believer of “the only way to learn is to do”. She has painted since 1995 and taught herself by studying, watching and talking to other famous artists.
“My passion is painting people in movement, using a wide range of colours. I am a bold artist, using colours that are in opposition to each other whilst still allowing colours to flow gently into each other. My inspiration has been fed by my living in or visiting more than 24 different countries, having a constant eye for detail and a very visual mind, always enjoying what nature has to offer. I feel very attracted to the ardent colours of the African soil and the wide range of colours from the beautiful Spanish mountains”.
Roger Cummiskey lives and works in Mijas Costa and Dublin. His latest solo exhibitions “A Stroll Thro’ Ulysses” include The Roxy ArtHouse Gallery, Edinburgh, Scotland and The Airfield Trust Gallery, Dublin, 2004. He was chosen to represent Ireland at The Florence Biennale in 2003 and invited again for 2005. He has also represented Ireland at International exhibitions in Stockholm, London and New York in 1999 and 2000. His works are part of public and private collections in Europe, The United States, Japan and China.

"Of special interest to this exhibition, Roger tells of the connection between James Joyce and Henrik Ibsen. Joyce taught himself Dano-Norwegian in a three week period in 1900 so that he could read and write from Dublin to favourably criticise one of Ibsen’s plays at the time – When We Dead Awaken. Ibsen was so impressed that he wrote back to the young (18 year old) Joyce thanking him. Joyce had referred to “the naked drama” in Ibsen who was to be a great influence on Joyce".
