Corpul ienicerilor a fost fondat de sultanul Murad I in 1365 de la tinerii crestini cu varste intre 12-16 ani (albanezi, armeni, bosniaci, bulgari, greci, georgieni, sarbi, rusi si alte persoane care sufereau), au fost ulterior adusi in traditia islamica.
Recrutarea copiilor in ieniceri (devshirme - Taxa de sange) a fost una dintre sarcinile cele mai dificile de non-musulmani ai imperiului, deoarece permitea autoritatilor sa selecteze si sa includa in serviciul pe cei mai dezvoltati fizic si intelectual tineri, astfel slabirea popoarele cucerite.

In ienicerii s-au recrutat copii exclusiv crestini.

Pe poporul moldovenesc, de asemenea, au vrut sa-i faca sclavii lor, dar ... 10 ian 1475 domnitorul Moldovei, Stefan cel Mare si Sfant a invins armata invincibila pana 120000 de soldati turci, special instruiti, cu 40 mii de tarani in armata sa!
