Originele kunstwerken kunnen elk type schilderij, beeldhouwwerk, performance of andere media zijn. Er zijn veel soorten originele media. Gemengde media zijn onder meer olie-, acryl- en aquarelverf. Voor werkplaatsschilderijen die getuigen van vakmanschap moet deze toeschrijving genuanceerder zijn. Hoewel ze om verschillende redenen misschien minder waardevol zijn, hadden de reproducties en kopieën een enorme impact op onze ervaring. Ze bereiken een breder publiek dan de originelen en werken als een tonicum tegen commodificatie.
