Originele kunstwerken zijn elk werk dat als authentiek wordt beschouwd en geen kopie of imitatie van het originele werk van een kunstenaar. Originele kunstwerken kunnen elk type schilderij, beeldhouwwerk, performance of andere media zijn. Er zijn veel soorten originele media. Gemengde media zijn onder meer olie-, acryl- en aquarelverf. Voor werkplaatsschilderijen die getuigen van vakmanschap moet deze toeschrijving genuanceerder zijn.
