Born in 1957, Volodimir Moldavskyi is a self-taught surrealist artist from Odessa, Ukraine, who currently lives and works in Croatia. Initially a mechanical design engineer, he gradually turned to visual arts, influenced by iconic figures such as Paul Whitehead, Roger Dean and Betty Swanwick. His passion for progressive rock music has also played a decisive role in his artistic journey.
In his works, Volodimir uses a variety of mediums, such as gel pen, ink and watercolor on paper, as well as acrylic on canvas. His surrealist creations are marked by a fusion between the human and the mechanical, offering a poetic and offbeat reflection on the links between these two worlds. This juxtaposition of human nature and the physical universe gives rise to intriguing compositions that question our relationship to reality and the imaginary.
Over the years, Moldavskyi has also explored digital painting, mastering software such as Photoshop and Painter. Between 2008 and 2016, he was asked to create album covers and promotional visuals for American progressive rock bands, such as Slychosis and Proximal Distance, strengthening his connection with this musical universe.
After the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Volodimir had to flee his country with his family. This forced exile deeply marked his work, which now reflects his personal reflections on the brutality of war and the nostalgia for his home. His recent works demonstrate a heightened sensitivity to the events, while retaining the surreal and dreamlike universe that characterizes him.
