For many years I focused my ideas on the figures I studied in fine art sculpture at college. But as my career progressed, I was commissioned to make sculptures that were outside of my traditional perspective. Firstly, I discovered that I could make anything I put my mind to, and secondly, commissions were opportunities to focus ideas on to new subject matter. One of these is where I won a commission to build a public sculpture of a horse for the City of Whitehorse. It was the head of that sculpture propped up on his nose in my studio , that sparked the idea of “head space”.

Stephen Glassborow, originating from Hammersmith, England, was destined for a life of artistic pursuit. His journey began with an apprenticeship as a sculpture student, honing his craft in the creative crucibles of Newcastle upon Tyne and Brighton College in the United Kingdom. In the early 1980s, the call of opportunity led him to Australia, where he blossomed into a seasoned professional sculptor, leaving an indelible mark on the artistic landscape.

At the core of his work lies a profound appreciation for traditional classical influences and meticulous anatomical observation. However, he adorns these foundations with a touch of finesse, marrying figurative precision with a refined elegance and beauty. This convergence occasionally gives rise to an Art Deco revival, where the echoes of a bygone era intertwine with contemporary artistic expression.

Glassborow's mastery lies in the ability to maintain the fluidity of the human form while attaining a crystalline muscular perfection through the medium of clay. This dynamic interplay between fluidity and precision serves as a constant source of exhilaration for the artist, propelling him forward in his exploration of the human body's boundless potential.

Bronze figurative sculpture resonates with a storied history, and for the artist, the inspiration traces back to the resplendent Art Deco period. This era serves as the cornerstone of his creative influence, but it's not the sole source. Parallel to this foundation is a wellspring of ideas that spring forth from eclectic sources—photographic imagery, the ever-evolving world of fashion, and even the realm of robotics.

Stephen Glassborow's artistic odyssey is a journey of convergence—of tradition and innovation, precision and fluidity, classical beauty and contemporary flair. His sculptures stand as timeless testament to the marriage of influences that shape his unique artistic voice, resonating across cultures and generations.
