Ci hanno caricati su lunghissimi treni. Migliaia di persone, combattenti e no. Poche valige, più che altro piene di cibo perché avvisati del lungo viaggio e dell’assenza di conforto. Si sente spesso piangere, ma soprattutto sono frequenti le invettive di chi non voleva la guerra ed oggi ne sconta come gli altri la perdita. Io, in divisa, vengo spesso insultato, ma il mio grado di semplice caporale, mi esenta da lunghe discussioni: ho eseguito gli ordini, questo dico e cambio aria. Va molto male per gli ufficiali, quelli sopravvissuti che oltre agli insulti, vengono aggrediti. Eppure, quando la guerra iniziò sembravano tutti convinti della sua necessità.
Giorni e giorni di treno con rare fermate, quando fanno scendere piccoli gruppi di persone, sprovviste di tutto, abbandonate in terre deserte.
Questa è crudeltà! Chi sopravviverà a tanto niente?
Tocca a me scendere assieme ad una ventina di persone: donne, bambini e solo quattro uomini.
Non andiamo subito d’accordo, chi ha un po’ di cibo non vuole dividerlo. Io mi allontano; faccio alcune centinaia di metri e mi accorgo che una giovane ragazza mi segue; l’ha mandata il padre; meno si è in famiglia e più cibo si divide. Non avrei mai pensato di mettere su famiglia; intanto però c’è da procurarsi il cibo e poi un tetto; guardo dalla cima di una collina e vedo un fiumiciattolo che scorre sinuoso. Il fiume e vita ed oltre all’acqua ci fornirà la carne delle bestie che fin da quassù vedo abbeverarsi; spero di esser più furbo di loro. Come selvaggi ma sopravviveremo.
