I taught art classes out of my studio in the nineties. This was a poster I created to advertise the class. It was plastered on boards in cafes, stores and night clubs in Downtown Toronto. The classes attracted business executives and rich wives who had married Canadians and were able to live comfortably without working. I taught some teenagers who were building their portfolios for school. Some people who were breaking, some hurting, some lost. I considered becoming an art therapist and I still might.

The two experiences I loved the most happened in my first class. I stood beside a student whose first attempt to draw a portrait looked a balloon head. He was so distressed by this that he was going to sit the exercise out. Well, that's not happening my class. I stood beside him and we decided which parts of the face were the most interesting. Then we decided which part of the face to start with. I drew in the same order beside him until he was convinced of what I tell everybody who is thinks their incapable of drawing. It's about concentration and allowing yourself the time to make it perfect. I get bored when attempting high realism. Bored of needed to use the eraser. Bored of measuring. Bored of the attempt to mimic something that can be photographed. But I can do it if required, It take longer than I think it should. But I know how. I also tell them that everyone's drawing looks wrong or strange or imperfect at first. He looked at mine beside his and he had confirmation.

We worked side by side for the whole class. I can say with confidence that I taught him to draw. A lot of people just came in to enjoy the environment and get tips here and there.

The other student who rocked my world was a stock broker from Bay Street who decided to travel the world after she took my course. From her comments, I derived a class that began with inspiring quotations that I asked to students to represent artistically.

I am a complete and utter dreamer because what I am being presented isn't right and it isn't enough. I raise my glass to those of you who believe this too. There can be apple juice in the glass or sparkling water, milk, anything...

Here's to big, fantastic dreams that come true. Followed by newer dreams until the end.

Simone Frank was born in Toronto, 1970. When she was three years old, her mother told her to draw the drapes. Her mother meant, of course, to close them. She did. After illustrating the decorative floral drapes, she was given an easel, brushes, a palette and oil paints as a gift. She remains, at heart, a painter.

She holds a BAA in Fashion Design – Ryerson University, a Dean’s list Diploma in Graphic Design – George Brown College and a writing certificate – Humber College and has exhibited in the GTA, the Caribbean and Tokyo. She was invited to exhibit her works of art in China. Her publishing history includes but is not limited to: “Aspects of Love,” Life as Human Magazine, August 2014 and Kiss, Triumph, Messenger, Litté Realité, Volume X. No 1, 1998, Sergio Villani.

For years her work has revolved around the notions of spirituality, racism, love, joy and harmony. Simone creates works that are inspiring and thought provoking in various mediums. She uses art as a vehicle to inform and to heal.
