JAFFA PORT IN GOLDEN - The port mentioned in The Book (2022) 绘画 由 Severn (Jie Cheng) Wang

The port of Jaffa (Yafa), a historic natural port on the Mediterranean Sea, located in the southwest corner of the today's Israeli capital Tel Aviv, was known in ancient times as Joppa, and an archaeological excavation in 1955 confirmed the presence of human activity in the area since 5000 B.C. The port is also mentioned in many ancient writings, such as the "History of Jewish Warfare" by the first century historian Flavio Josephus. It is also mentioned in the Bible that Solomon and Zerubbabel received cedar from Lebanon at this port, and that Jonah boarded a ship here to go to Tarshish. Today Jaffa harbor is still used as a small fishing port and a dining and leisure attraction in Tel Aviv. During my trip with my wife, I also stayed briefly in Jaffa.

In this watercolor, I wanted to focus the subject matter on the Jaffa Light. Since the Jaffa Light itself has a two-part, red and white structure, I weakened and ignored all other red objects in the scene in order to emphasize this red and white contrast to highlight the subject of the scene. For the two small boats on the left side of the scene, I adjusted the angle of the bow of one boat and the white painted part of the side of the other boat to make the capitals of the two boats point upward to the right, guiding the visual line of the painting towards the Jaffa Light. Since I handled the buildings in the scene in detail, I eliminated the waves on the surface of the sea that I had planned to paint in order not to fill the scene with too many small elements. It is also echoed with the blue-gray sky, and the small boat between the sea and the building also presents a visual transition and pointing effect.

This watercolor was exhibited at this year's 12th Annual "Seascapes" Art Exhibition and received a Special Merit award for a total of 556 entries.

这幅画作中，我希望将画面的重点放在雅法灯塔上。由于雅法灯塔本身就有一个两段式的红色塔身，为了强调这种红白的对比突出画面主体，我对画面中其他红色的物体都进行了削弱、忽略。画面左侧两艘小船，我调整了一艘船首的角度与另一艘船舷的白漆涂装，使得两艘船的船首都呈现向右上方指向的效果，引导画面中的视觉动线向灯塔移动。由于画面中建筑物我都处理的较详细，为了不让画面中充斥太多小元素，原本计划要画的海面波纹我就去掉了。正好也是和蓝灰色的天空呼应，小船在海面与建筑之间也呈现视觉上过渡与指向的作用。

这幅画作参展今年的 第12届“海景”艺术展（12th Annual “Seascapes” Art Exhibition）入选并获得 特殊荣誉 奖项 (Special Merit)，共计556件作品参赛。
