Os egípcios usaram vários nomes para se referir à sua terra. O mais comum era Chemete, "Terra Negra" ou "Terra Fértil", que se aplicava especificamente ao território às margens do Nilo e que aludia à terra negra trazida pelo rio todos os anos, e era diferente de Dexerete, "Vermelho Terra", que se referia aos desertos que rodeavam o Nilo, onde os egípcios só entravam para enterrar os seus mortos ou para explorar pedras e metais preciosos. Eles também a chamavam de Taui ("as Duas Terras", ou seja, Alto e Baixo Egito), Tameri ("Terra Amada") ou Ta Netjeru ("Terra dos Deuses"); na Bíblia, é chamado de Misraim (em hebraico: מִצְרַיִם; romaniz.: Mizraim, literalmente "os dois estreitos (Alto e Baixo Egito)").
