The different maple species are either classified in their own family, the Aceraceae, or (along with Hippocastanaceae) included in the family Sapindaceae. Modern classifications, including the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group classification, favor inclusion in Sapindaceae.
The word maple derives from a Latin word meaning "sharp" (referring to the characteristic tips of the leaves) and was first employed for the genus by the French botanist Joseph Pitton de Tournefort in 1700.
Maple syrup or maple syrup is produced from the sap of the tree, consumed mainly with toast, pancakes and french toast.
