Rebecca Touati is a contemporary French collage artist, born in Clamart, aged thirty. She currently resides in Rennes, Brittany.
After seeing the works of Breton artist Jacques Villeglé at the George Pompidou Center in 2009, she discovered the technique of collage. In 2012, she continued her studies with a degree in Art History at the Catholic Institute of Paris. Then, three years later, she wrote her research thesis on collage in the punk movement (1976-1980), attracted by vibrant colors, typography and DIY aesthetics.
She mainly works in analog collage using materials collected over years of curiosity, hunting for magazines, newspapers, comics, posters. It sticks most of the time intuitively, free of all the predefined subjects by letting the magic of image combinations operate.
Some of his compositions present different textured elements such as acrylic and watercolor paint, dried flowers, fabric, feathers, kraft, forming sets of materials.
Collage allows Rebecca Touati to express her love of paper, ephemeral materials that are transformed by entering into a cycle of "rupture and continuity". By reusing images from the past, assembled in a new setting, a new narrative emerges. His personal and artistic quest are guided by this generative and ritual creation.
"The spontaneity and imperfections that come with the process of hand-collage are my favorite part of the medium." Rebecca Touati
